Exhaust

I think my exhaust (1987 Targa) has started to blow!
I got underneath to see what part of it was blowing and it would seem the whole lot is a pile of rust. Is it an easy job to replace the whole system myself and will I be able to use the existing heat exchangers? Most of the bolts holding the parts together have just rusted to bits, so not sure how long it will hold together.

Any info will be much appreciated.

It's not a big job to change the back box Neil, soak all the nuts in a penetrating oil of your choice for a few hours or use heat . If the exhaust is knackered get the car up on a lift and thoroughly inspect the whole system, you may well find other imminent problems.

As Bones said the back box is easy, had my exhaust done a few years ago glad I had a local garage do it for me with all the bolts rusted in the holes the cross over pipe was a swine thay had to drill out all the old bolts to save the heat exchanges 2 1/2hrs work with the right tools. Luckilly I got a price before he started £30. So before you start soak all the old bolts and nuts with penetrating oil a few times and over a few days as well.
When you put the new one back on use SS bolts and nuts this will help if you have to take it back off to do any work on the engine

Thanks for the advice.

The heat exchanges seem fine, so it will be a shame/costly to replace them.

I'll get the overalls out at the weekend and soak the bolts.

Within a couple of weeks I will have a complete 3.2 exhaust for sale if you are interested in any pieces. I believe I may have sold the pre-muff and muffler already but the crossover is about a year old and is the 2 piece stainless part that is much easier to fit/remove than the single piece and the heat exchangers are in good shape.

Let me know if this is of any interest.

Good luck with the removal. If the H/Es have to come off, be very careful as it is easy to break an exhaust stud. If you attempt this yourself then repeated applications of heat (oxy acetelene torch best but mapp gas is ok) to the nuts are advised in order to break the rust free. Gently tighten the nut when it is cherry red, then if it moves back it off, otherwise repeat heat. Use a tiny socket/wrench to avoid inadvertant applications of too much torque.

There is a thread ongoing at the moment on exhausts, so do a search... here it is:

As a rough guide, a full s/steel system is around £1500 for a top grade H&S system - you can get back boxes from around £400 for decent ones, heat exchangers are £800-£1000 i believe for like for like replacement (so you may as well get the whole system upgraded).

The prices do vary wildly though and it is something I am going to be doing shortly, just not sure the best route.

Try Bert Gear @ Berlyn Services for prices on a full std replacement system - my guess is around £1100-1200 for a s/s system.

If you are clever at sourcing the parts in the US you can get a performance enhancing SSI/pre-74 type system for around £1000. You should certainly take a look at the other thread as suggested.

I paid only £486.45 including VAT & carriage for a full stainless system, excluding the heat exchangers - mine were OK, last year. Included all brackets and gaskets and is excellent. PowerMarques were the supplier - nice guy as well - very helpful. www.powermarques.co.uk

Yes, so £1100-1200 once you add £700 worth of s/s HEs, yes?

Does anyone know a good contact to supply DANSK(E) back boxes? I was recommended this as a route 1 option by one of the main guys at Ninemeister yesterday. Look good, sound good and around the £250 mark for a single outlet (albeit slightly bigger tail pipe than standard).

I bought one a few years back from Specialist cars of Malton. It cost £299 + VAT for a single 84mm tip - Just sold it on Ebay for £125.
I'm sure if you asked Dave at Strasse he would be able to get hold of one for you
