exhausts

Any ideas about stainless exhausts ( single outlet) and approx cost? Also my heat exchangers look like they are stainless - is this likely since current exhaust is non stainless?

What are you looking to replace - the whole thing, just the rear banana shaped muffler, what?

Why do you want to replace? Rusty, more performance, better sound?

There is plenty of experience on this board but we need a little guidance before we can say anything sensible.

I use a full, stainless system from Hayward&Scott, cost about £1,500.
This is an equal length, no crossover system, meant to give about 10/15 bhp more on forced induction. Single outlet, 3". Looks almost standard, apart from 2 flanges hanging down slightly.

Sounds better (I have the least noisy version, with a slight boom at 1,700 revs), and drives better (the supercharger revs easier), but no back to back tests.

Present exhaust is very rusty - heat exchangers look OK - looking to replace everything except heat exchangers if poss - not looking for more power -more sound would be fine .

Just had mine replaced. All parts except heat exchangers and the cross over. Standard steel 250 pounds fro the parts. 1.5hrs labour - with labour and vat c. 350 pound.

gives u an idea for basic exhaust.

First decision is whether you want to keep the HEs? It seems you do, so you must stick to the std configuration - which works well with the std pistons, cams and intake/injection. This means a replacement crossover pipe, pre-muffler and muffler are on your shopping list. Opting for a 2 piece crossover pipe is smart as it means the HEs do not have to be removed for fitment.

The Hayward & Scott systems would mean replacing your perfectly serviceable HEs. It is a 3 into 1 header type system that uses a 2in 1/2out rear muffler - like the pre 74 cars - so its quite different from what you currently have. Gains in torque and peak horsepower are often claimed for this type of system but to really exploit them you need some clever chip remapping. 15hp is about the most you should expect - perhaps less. Last time I looked H&S were £1600+. You can do the same kind of thing with SSI HEs and a 2in 2out muffler of your choice for less £££ than H&S, say £800 plus muffler, depending on where you buy.

You have the cheap (but perfectly acceptable) option outlined above. The mild steel parts in std configuration are fine and should last 5+ years.

If you want to spend more you can get stainless components. The crossover pipe and premuffler get a lot of road crud stuck to them so stainless may be a smart bet. The choice of rear muffler is up to you: single or dual outlet? quiet or noisy? big tailpipe or std size? Budget on £200ish for mild steel and £350+ for stainless sports. Be aware that 2out mufflers require cutting the rhs rear valence and that 2 out sport mufflers may have insufficient back pressure to make full midrange torque.

Off the top of my head, online vendors may include Essential Styling, Design 911, Type 911, Berlyn Services, but there are more.

Hope that helps.

If you decide on a two in two out system what you need is one of these

Don't expect spectacular bhp gains from exhaust mods on a 3.2.

IMHO, unless the engine is re-mapped between changing the exhaust system, then frankly, all you are proving is just which system works best with any one ignition / injection timing etc.

The only (sure fire) way to conduct A:B:C etc... modifications is either to normalise or optimse. Normalising is a monster job. Optimising is easier.

Unless they modified the system to get the maximum out of the exhaust then the results may be less meaningful than otherwise.

I replaced mine with a stainless system (rear box ,crossover pipe and pre silencer ) with all gaskets and stainless straps for £450 (no exchangers).Only took a couple of hours to change. Try Watson Auto Parts.
This is only a replacement so you wont get any gain in performance and it sounds like original one ( which sounds sweet anyway!)

Do they have a UK distributor and UK costings? Looks like a nice lightweight exhaust, hopefully without resonance due to its crossover design. Just looking at it, it is hard to believe it isn't a little restrictive - two right angle bends - but the dyno results (if accurate) tell a different story. Should also be good for midrange torque with the crossover design.

While we are on the topic of exhausts, I wonder if anyone can volunteer the price of a pair of SSIs sourced from a UK distributor. Who is the cheapest? Any thoughts?

I can vouch for the Triad exhaust providing a healthy feeling of extra power, combined with the early heat exchangers I fitted I'm definitely benefiting from the claimed horsepower this mod brings. If you want stainless steel SSIs are the way to go, careful you buy the real thing and not the Dansks that some dealers are apparently trying to pass of as SSIs pretending they are a type of exhaust rather than a brand. If you don't want the expense and don't drive in bad weather regularly buy mild steel or source some good ones from a breaker like Idid. My 73 HEs cost £180.00 a pair and the exhaust was £233.00 via USPS. Oil lines I had to pay the going rate for though.
Triad don't hava a UK dist' , they are fairly loud but make a glorious 70's rally Porsche type sound and make the horsepower others claim. I doubt the improvement will be quite so substantial on a 3.2.

Keep an eye on E-bay there is a firm in Birmingham who sell new bits cross over, pre-silencer and rear box all in stainless. I bought a cross over pipe from them and it looks good. Got a stainless pre silencer from Specialist cars of Malton including gaskets for £138 including P&P delivered next day. Fitted it with all new stainless bolts what a difference. Baz
