Expansion tank not covered under warranty?

Hi

Had my 01 facelift C4 serviced on Sat at East London OPC and was advised I needed to have the coolant expansion tank replaced as it was leaking (a split apparently). I was told on the day that this was covered under the warranty, so no worries. However, I was called today and told that in fact this is not covered under the warranty!
The OPC are in the process of calling the OPC where I bought the car (3 months ago) to see if they will cover the cost and I am awaiting their answer.

Does anyone out there know if it is or not, as I would have thought it was?

Many thanks

If you bought it from an OPC, IMO you should ask them to replace/repair it at no expense to you. Mention the words, "merchantable quality" and "fitness for purpose". If through a garage, use the same expressions. If it was a private purchase, have a look at the contract of sale [if you have one].

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Yes I bought it from OPC Aberdeen in July and OPC East London are awaiting their reply on whether they will pay for it. Are you saying that it is not covered under the Porsche extended warranty then?

So sorry, I know nothing about the warranty and, in any event, the contract might be covered by Scottish law - and I assume that their consumer laws differ from ours.

Good luck.

Nobody I know has successfully claimed for an expansion tank on the Porsche warranty, and there have been more than a few who have tried!

The point that I am making is that Dazzler has only owned the car since July 2007 and it would not be reasonable for such a fault to occur within such a short time. This must have ben a pre-exisitng fault/problem and the OPC should accept responsibility, regardless of the warranty.

If anyone pays a [large] sum of money for a vehicle, they are entitled to think that there will not be a substantial claim for any fault for which they are not responsible. This is the position [in general terms] in English law. As for the Scots ...

The way I've heard OPCs wriggle out of it is that they treat the tank as a "wear" item. I doubt if you would get anywhere by persuing it, but I guess it's worth a try.

Hi

Ok, a happy end!!

Just spoke to East London OPC and it turns out Aberdeen OPC have agreeed to pay for the tank, so all good.

Also on another point, East London OPC give 10% discount on parts to PCGB members - saving me about £62.

Thanks for your replies and help

Good result!

A facelift replacement tank is only around £50 from Eurocarparts...it's really the labour that's expensive (at an OPC around £220+VAT).....are they doing that FOC as well?

Richard, I don't think you have been proven wrong. I don't believe they will be fixing it as a warranty claim, but because of what Julian mentioned - you can't expect to buy a car in July and have the expansion tank go so soon.

I'm sure they will call it a 'Good will gesture' though.

As Richard mentioned, the expansion tank is NOT covered under the Extended Warranty, and only a goodwill gesture will see it fixed FOC (if that is indeed what they are doing and not just supplying the tank FOC).

when i had my 996 cab 02 model expansion tank leaking replaced under warranty by opc east london

Hey Chris...are u still counting the days?[;)]

OPC East London told me it wasn't covered when I put in a claim just this March. Are you sure it was replaced under warranty or because you bought your car from an OPC not long before?

Hi all

Wow, I've started quite a debate here!

Just to clarify, the work was done on Sat at the time of the service as I was told then it was covered under the warranty. It was only today I was called and told it wasn't. However, OPC EL sorted it all out with OPC Ab, as a good will gesture I believe, so all fine, done and dusted.
