Expansion Tank Repair

Have just discovered what I think is the cause of my coolant loss. I have found some fine cracks in the top of the expansion tank. Has anyone successfully repaired one? I was thinking of maybe filling the cracks with some stiff araldite or some sort of epoxy. Any thoughts? Has anyone done this?

These things get pressurised when the engine is upto temp - if it is cracked you'll need a new one. I seem to remember they were about £60 brand new about 4 years ago or so - imagine how nice a nice white one will look instead of your aged yellow one!!

Rob

when you have given up the glue just give me the word and i can supply you with one

ps any luck on the new list yet.

Yes was going to put the list together tonight mate. Do you have any turbo tanks Elliot? They are different to N/A as they need plumbing for the turbo cooling pump. I just checked porsche shop and they want about £85, which obviously I am not going to pay being a massive skinflint [:D]

.  I just checked porsche shop and they want about £85,

Check with Porsche themselves and you'll find that it's probably nearer to Scotts suggestion

I know I had a new one from Porsche a couple of years ago for less than £50

I know mate I normally do run everything through OPC Cambridge and on occasion they have came through. A good second hand unit would do to be honest. As long as it was tested.

This is the one job I think everyone should do. Every time you see an open bonnet with a lovely clean expansion tank it lifts the heart. [:D]

Why save a few quid and replace it with another dirty brown tank? All that work, it'll probably leak in the near future anyway and you'll hate seeing it every time you open the bonnet.

Then I might have to clean everything else under the bonnet to match [:(]

Just checked OPC Cambridge you might want to triple that figure then add some Vodka & Tonic [&:]

i bought one last year from Porsche Swindon for my turbo.

£80 inc vat. You might want to give Tim a call there.

You would think that the price shouldn't be any different at any branch. I got Max Schenker at Frazerpart to check the Porsche OPC price and that's what he came up with also.

Parts prices do vary wildly from part to part and opc to opc. I used to shop around opc's and was often staggered by the variation. Unless a non-opc price could be beat by more than 10% I'd buy opc and most parts I bought were from the opc. I found opc nottingham would usually knock the vat off too. Why get a competing parts supplier to check opc prices for you? They are hardly incentivised to find you the best price, especially if it beats theirs.

To be fair to Max he has quite good connections with OPC and if he cannot beat OPC price then he will tell you so and advise you buy from them. I admire his honesty [:)]

wow andy! i thought mine was clean but yours blows it out of the water and the new tanks look great. so much better then my biege looking ones, job for the future, well done mate, regards jason p

Andy.
Looks mega clean, makes a big difference by just changing some plastic tanks, cheque in the post BTW !

Andy - that looks really nice. Just a shame he grimy clutch fluid and power steering bottles are letting it down ;-)

How long do they actually stay white like that for? I've heard the expansion tanks go yellow pretty quickly, due to the heat. Not that it matters, of course!

Thanks fellers for the nice comments,

Jason, it is not that clean at the moment!! need a weekend of luv for the old girl

Jim, cheers mate the better half should post your pressie tomorrow for you

Scott, what did you go and say that for!![:D][:D] they have been annoying me for a while

Marv, the expansion tank has been in since June 05, clutch and washer tank since September 09

By the way the expansion tank was £50.66, washer tank £43.29 both from OPC & the brake reservoir I picked up of ebay for £5

I suspect the expantion tank goes brown due to corrosion in the water, so keep on top of the coolant changes and I reckon they'll stay nice and clear for some time.

Andy - sorry didn't mean to cause you any dispair! That is one of the cleanest and tidiest 944 engine bay's i've ever seen!
