Expensive oops...

As a bank holiday project I decided to pull the cylinder head off the S2, as a precautionary head gasket change/check of valve guide condition. All going fairly well until I come to get the cams out. Despite loosening all the housings in sequence, half turn at a time etc I failed to spot that the cams weren't coming out straight and the the front set of bearings had stuck in the housing. By the time I'd realised, the spring pressure had cracked both cams at the locating flanges at the ends. Pics attached.

Before anyone else says it, I'm an idiot.

Any one know where I can get a set of cams from that won't require a remortgage? I'm going to ring round the breakers when they reopen on Tuesday, failing that Berlyn services has them listed at £387.75 each, although I don't even know if he has any stock until he reopens after Easter. Doh.

That sounds a pretty good price but you may also want to try the recommedation of one of our old forum regulars. He had two sets of cam replacaed on S2's that had damaged cams and his local independant had a good source at excellent prices, try Andy Moss on 07762 244477 based in Honiton

have you seen that someone is breaking an s2 on the for sale forum?

Thanks all. Calmed down a bit now but it wasn't my best bit of mechanical skill ever.

Thats quite a project...........................

Mine is to get the grass cut [;)]

Good luck anyway.

It's coming along, I've now got a lounge full of the top half of an S2 engine. The better half is tolerating it so far but she doesn't know how much the cams cost yet..

Luckily the cams can go in pretty near the end of the rebuild so there's other bits I can do while I'm waiting.

jeez Tim commiserations mate. I'm sure we've all been there at some time or other.
Have you looked on ebay yet ? there is usually someone breaking a 944 there. You could pick up a complete car for £450 and sell what you don't need on here and ebay keep some spares and take the remainder to the tip

Judging from your photos another S2 owner in Beeston/Chilwell? Yours isn't a black one is it?

Bad luck on the cams. Must admit I don't yet have the balls to go diving into my engine like that.

Phil, you just freaked me out until I remembered that I'd got some newspaper in the background of the photos. Yes, I'm in Beeston. Car is white (grubby white at this time of year), have seen a very similar white S2 occasionally but no black ones.

May think twice before pulling the engine to bits in future, I'm used to vag/ford engines that are a bit simpler than the S2 lump.

Can't help, but comiserations mate.

Broken stuff always annoys me. Breaking stuff myself, as a result of my own stupidity, is a cross I have had to bear on many an occasion, but repetition doesn't make it any easier!

Oli.

Just a note of thanks to everyone who responded, ended up with a 2nd hand head and cams from PH in Shardlow for less than the price of one new cam...

Went for a drive round tonight and all is well again (once the oil had burned off the exhaust). Just need to stop the exhaust blowing, work out why the balance belt is so loud, put the undertray back on (does this do anything apart from stopping drips on the drive?) etc etc.
