how much is an extended warranty and how long does/can it last? i have a 2005 987 S, got a year until november as i bought it from porsche - wondering if it is worth taking out after november (yes, very early days). what does it cover? can't find anything on the porsche site...thanks in advance!

hi jamie
it costs £895 p.a and covers most items that are not "fair wear and tear"it seems.it also seems a lot more comprehensive than many "comprehensive"warranties.however, the wear and tear items are not without debate!-fo instance the transmisssion gearlever cable was seen as wear and tear after only 10 k miles.....most peoples experience with claims seems good though-as it should be(imho)for £895!

I agonised over the warranty earlier this year for my wife's 2.7.

But, now I know I made the right decision. Last week it had a new RMS fitted along with new litronic headlights. Both covered on warranty.

At least this year I think I got my money's worth.

For anybody on a tighter budget; there are plenty of warranties available from other sources. I investigated these some time back and found warranties around £300 covering almost everything up to high values. I am sure there are exclusions and people who have had bad experiences, as with all insurance. However, for those with an older Boxster on a tighter budget they have to be a good idea, anybody have any experiences?

I intend to look further soon. The dealer I bought from gave me an AA warranty. Trouble is reading the small print it is up to £250. That will hardly get the engine cover off. Dealers do have statutory obligations so until I have had the car for the statutory 3 months and could sue his bottom off if anything went wrong a warranty is a few weeks away.

thanks for the info - bit off topic but what is RMS? i keep seeing people upset by it but hae no idea what it is? thanks again, jamie

The official Porsche warranty has no claim limit, and no excess which is something that you should check on the samll print of any other warranty you look at. A Porsche warranty will be very attractive to a used buyer as well so definitely worth considering if you are thinking of selling within the warranty period.

Interestingly BMW's used warranty varies in price depending on the excess you wish to have which seems like a good way of bringing down cost - after all, you don't expect your prestige car to go wrong at all but are really only insuring yourself against the very unlikely event of a major failure.

I agonised about the warranty when my Cayman S came up for its 2 years. I reckoned that there was no way I could afford a major bill and so I spent the £895. The car is with an OPC (who are treating me incredibly well) and once they have fitted the contents of a very large crate that is arriving from the factory I will have my car back good as new and FOC no quibble. Over the last two weeks I have been lent a Carrera 4S and a 2.7 Boxster to get about in.
Take the warranty
Take the warranty
Shall I say it again?,
Take the warranty

i agree with alex that if you cant afford a potential bill the size of a small countrys gdp then go for the extended warrranty.also if you are going to suffer from anxiety without it then get it.if you travel in europe a lot with the porsche also prob worth doing.i do not worry nor do i take the porsche to europe(not thisyr anyway)so i have decided to put the £900 aside .i may regret it but i am pretty relaxed about it.up to you really

I recently bought a 2002 S from a private seller. I only went ahead after I found I could get an AA Gold warranty, that includes the top road-side assistance cover, for about £35/month. Claim limit is to the value of the car, and maximum limit in a year is also the value of the car. Which I think is plenty.
