Extended Warranty - a note of caution

Those of you considering the extended warranty should bear the following in mind.....

2 months into my first extended warranty period and I get an airbag warning light on the car. "Thank God that I finally decided on the extended warranty" thinks I, and got the car booked in. I've just had a phone call from the stealer to say that I must underwrite 1.5 hours worth of labour (£175 !!!) before they will complete the diagnosis (i.e. just to find the fault - not to actually fix it). I challenged this and was told that if the fault turned out to be a component then all would be covered by the warranty - no charge, but if the fault was with the wiring this wasn't covered and not only would I have to pay the £175, but also the additional cost to fix the issue as well [][]!

Unfortunately I don't have the warranty booklet to hand and so I cannot check the detail, but the above story should be considered by all - it seems that the warranty and the "peace of mind" it buys might not be as much as we'd been led to believe.

..... It gets better.

I've now had another phone call to say that the fault is with the drivers airbag itself. Great - so its covered under the warranty following the earlier conversation (being a component, not wiring)......err, well no not actually. Despite what I was told earlier certain components are also excluded and guess what, this includes the airbags [][]!!

It really makes you think why on earth you should bother with this extended warranty - its got more hidden exclusions than you can shake a stick at.

If it isn't covered under the extended warranty, ask for it to be addressed as a 'sympathetic' manufacturing claim.

If it is a UK car, supplied via PCGB, and OPC maintained, then PCGB may cover it, or at least make a worthwhile contribution to the cost. This is based on the 'unofficial' policy of providing 2 years fixed warranty, and then looking 'sympathetically' at claims thereafter, particularly in year 3.

That's not good and I'm an advocate of the extended warranty.

I haven't got a warranty T&C booklet and I'm wondering now what is and what isn't covered.
I do however remember the OPC who supplied my car and the extended warranty telling me I'd have nothing to worry about...just the standard exceptions of "wear and tear" items. I suppose they'll all say that.

Seems a request from the OPC to Porsche GB is your best hope. Good luck

Hi, does the 2 year and extended warranty cover track day useage? I think i read somewhere that an M3 owners warranty claim was dismissed because of track day use.
