Extended Warranty - Advice Please

Approaching the end of the OPC 12 month warranty on a 2001 C2 Tiptronic. Car is the facelift 3.6 has covered just over 20K from new, nearly half the miles since I took ownership. Car has just had the four year (48K) service at OPC with no problems reported. My dilema is, do I renew the warranty at £725 or keep the money and trust Porsche reliability and the OPC goodwill should a major failure happen. What would you do ?

IMO go for the extension of your OPC warranty. All may be well at present, but if something goes seriously wrong, and I sincerely hope that it does not, the cost can be horrendous. Paying a sum now for the OPC warranty will give you peace of mind. I fear that Porsche goodwill may be somewhat limited for a 4 year old car.

The truth is, the 996s, particularly the later 3.6 models, are incredibly reliable.

Porsche know this. The Extended Warranty is an insurance policy and the premium has been actuarially calculated to minimise the risk to the underwriter and Porsche. If you give them £725 they know that, on average, they will make a profit.

However, despite this, I would renew. The Extended Warranty does provide peace of mind, especially if you believe the scare stories that crop up on the various Forums. It is a numbers game, and you could be unlucky. And, if you wanted to sell the car privately, you would need the Extended Warranty to get a decent price.

Don't take too long to decide as just after a service you will save on the points check which are required for an extended warranty at an additional cost.

...and as Oliver mentioned if you happen to sell it within the next year then that money will pretty much pay for itself.

I don't think there's an inspection on a renewal - hence the advantage of maintaining the cover.

If it lapsed then there would need to be an inspection, plus the cost of rectifying any faults, before it could be renewed.

we had our car serviced (3 year old 3.6 - 32k miles) and renewed the warrenty.

3 days later the gear linkages went (cost £425 plus vat) was not cover under the warrenty, however they still did it FOC.

So I think the warrenty works, even for jobs which may not be covered, it may help with goodwill claims.

That may be the case, but that doesn't mean that on average, getting a warranty will lead to someone not making an financial gain, just because Porsche, on average, stand to make a financial gain.
ie Porsche can make a profit and so can you (save costs)
eg You put in a claim for a £1000 job (OPC price) under warranty. The claim actually costs Porsche £500 to rectify.

Sorry, I should have been clearer, yes there is no inspection cost on renewal; when I referred to don't let it elapse long after the service, I made the assumption that your annual service was in the same month as the warranty renewal...
