Extended Warranty advice

Hi there,

My 997 is due for it's first 'major' service next month when it will be 4 years old. It has covered 14,000 miles.
On top of the service cost (about £1k I was told) I will need to consider extending the warranty.
I'm sure there have been loads of posts around the value of the OPC extended warranty but try as I might I just can'd find a conclusion.
Can ayone point me in the right direction ?

Essentially, I'm just interested in what non OPC warranties I should consider, and if not, should I go for a 1 year or 2 year warranty.

Just trying to avoid a £3.5k bill for service and 2 year warranty extension !

Many thanks for your help.

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

I have got the same car with same milage and mine is also coming up for 4 year service soon. One tip I have heard to keep bills down is to supply your own oil, I got 4 litres of the Mobil One stuff for £19 at Costco. I think I paid that for almost a litre at the OPC.

I am going to call round the different dealers to see if there is any difference between them. Would be greatful to hear of any other tips or deals.

OPC should give you 10% off the parts for PCGB membership, and may allow you to supply your own oil. An independent will do your major service for about £650 , so i'd decide whether you want the Porsche warranty first, and if not ring the OPC with the Independents service pricing and see what they'll do to be competitive.

Tech9 have launched their warranty but its not much cheaper than the Porsche one, but will cover modified cars.

hi stewart
i have a 997 turbo it will be 3yr olds in october and i do approx 3k miles a year. last year when it was 2yrs old i got first service done it cost me £583.00 at opc. i refused exd warranty as i think it is a rip off as well as the one hundred odd point check qualifying stint ( another £130 extra). Im not trying to influence you either way but really these cars are supposed to be in a league of their own in engineering etc etc. If you drive car properly and keep an eye on oil, water level etc then i think you would be very unlucky to have a problem especially as you do low mileage. you need to keep up your service requirements and you have the option og opc or independant.
touch wood i havent had any problems during my third year.
good luck

Appreciate all the feedback. I know taking a warranty is probably money down the drain but I would kick myself if something major went wrong and I had to put my hand in my pocket.

Like the oil idea though, will almost certainly supply my own (and buy it from Costco !).

Here's the latest FYI. Spoke with Porsche East London and asked what discounts are available to PCGB members.

They instantly offered 10% discounts on parts and labour.

Also ok for me to take my own oil. They will reduce the service bill by £135 and I can buuy 12 litres (3 x 4 litre bottles) from Costco for £68.94

So net will end up paying around £850 instead of £1000 for the major service.

Unfortuantely no discounts on the warranty. I guess the policies are underwritted by Porsche directly and the dealers have no flexibility ?
