Extended Warrenty Options ?

Guest

New member
My car is nearly 2 years old and so I need to take out an extended warrenty - does anyone know any details of suitable non-porsche policies (must cover RMS)? I've been quoted £725 by my OPC and would like to compare that to any other options which might be out there (particularly if you've been unlucky enough to have to use the policy - how did you get on?).

Many Thanks

Darren.

I don't think they cover Porsche any more...

Also, keep in mind most others will put a cap on the maximum you can claim and if you are planning to sell it within a year then a buyer would be ready to pay your asking price if it has Porsche's own warranty...

How long a warranty does the £725 buy?

Sadly only 12 months and you get a free RAC membership thrown in...
Extending straight after your 2 years service (hopefully which is just before the end of the warranty) would save you the check which has to be done to get the warranty...

Just called them, you can only take out warranty direct with them if you are a civil servant

I had my 986 for 4 years and 52,000 miles. I bought it new and didn't bother with the extended warranty - I serviced it according to the schedule at the OPC and was fortunate that nothing went wrong. As such, my advice would be to set aside £730 in the bank each year. If nothing goes wrong, you have a nice holiday paid for.... It's all down to how you manage the risk.

Personally I have always renewed the warranty on my cars, BMW & Porsche, and it has always paid off to do so. Again, its up to you if you want to risk something major happening or not.

I self-insure the things where my own personal bank balance is good for the renewal cost. That way, in the long run I make the profit that the insurer would have made.

So, new fridge/TV/DVD extended warranties ... no thanks.
House insurance up to rebuilding cost ... yes please
Extended warranty on the 996 ... yes, probably.

Michael - yes, but your extended warrantly is not covering the cost of replacing the car (that's what your car insurance is for) rather the cost of repairing something going bang. What you need to do is consider the risk of more than £750 per year of stuff going wrong which you may be able to take a punt on based on how the car has performed over the first 2 years of your ownership. If you buy used, then I would say the warranty was mandatory. You can also factor in the "goodwill" possibility of the OPC who may come to some sort of agreement on the RMS issue if you've serviced you car there and have a deposit down for a new 997....

I extended the warranty on my boxster last year. Yes it was a lot of money and nothing has gone wrong with my car - but i've slept better!

Oh yes - those are the lines I'm thinking along. Mainly the cost of a new engine if the present one goes bang. That sort of thing. It sits in a grey area, where I'd pay without a second thought ... but she'd hit the roof [:D]

I would tend to be in the save the money camp, and use it if something happens. Short of a catastrophic engine failure, you'd have over £2k to throw at a major incident in 3 year period, say. On the other hand if nothing happens how could that money be used - some nice accessories on the next one...?

Oh, that's a thought.

Oh dear. 2006 is going to be expensive, I can feel it. [;)]

Mmph, a lot of good advice here, many thanks for your views. Had a chat with the OPC, and as long as you take the extended warrenty out before your current warrenty expires you don't need to have an inspection carried. It is well worth doing this given that it cost OVER £200 for this check up []!!!!!!

Now the question is.......How lucky do I feel ??

Suggest you get hold of the policy doc and read it thoroughly before making a decision. Although the Porsche extended warranty at £725 sounds expensive, and it doesn't cover absolutely everything (eg door seals, body parts etc), it does cover a lot more expensive mechanical and electrical bits than most of the other warranties, doesn't have financial limits, and covers European geography not just UK, including (if I remember rightly) vehicle recovery, hotel bills etc. So if you plan to travel to Europe (which I do) you can take that into account as well, if you would normally buy that separately. I hate paying the bill but love the piece of mind. For example, I have so far had a dicky ignition switch and the horn has just stopped working - no hassle, no poking around, just get it fixed by OPC. Not sure what would happen if the engine blew up on the Nurburgring though!

Although it's technically a public road I would suggest a flatbed ride as far away from Nurburg as possible before phoning Porsche Assistance [&:]
