You should be OK with a cover providing the car and cover are clean when you fit it. If however you intend to fit this daily and the car/cover are less than clean the paintwork could suffer.

I used to have one on my 944, a good quality general one not fitted to the shape. When it got windy it used to blow up like a balloon despite having a few straps around the car. It didn't seem good for the paintwork having the cloth flapping and rubbing on it. After 2 got ripped apart in storms at £100 a piece I called it a day.

I bought a car cover many moons ago for my Boxster.

Firstly, if there was any dirt on the car, it seemed to be rubbed into the piantwork. The cover was intended to fit the car but it did so fairly loosely and I think that dust got underneath it.

Secondly, in some very, very high wind the straps broke/ripped off and I found the cover torn and ruined about 50 yards away. I never replaced it.

There is a different cover if you keep a car in a garage - it keeps that terrible dust off the car.

I bought a Noah from cover craft almost 3 years ago. It cost me about £300. it's tailor made for the car, fits like a glove and does not flap in the wind. I've had no problems at all with it. I use it whenever the car is parked outside my house for long periods of time to prevent damage from cat's and also birds muck. I live in London and dont use the car that much so wanted some sort of protection for it. I can thoroughly recommend it.

I also use the Covercraft Noah and would recommend it. It is thicker than most other covers (I had a Covercraft Weathershield before) and does not tear, is pretty well cat proof and is easier to put on and off when there is a wind. Its not cheap but its worth it.

I use a cover from Cover Systems that covers just the softop - being the most vulnerable part with respect to bird droppings etc. Plus you don't have the scuffing issues. At about £45 it's a good buy but I had to adapt the elastic loops to attach to the wheels rather than just going under the 'bumpers'.
