Was looking for the Fleabay ad for a 952 mentioned in another thread when I found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-944S-2-7L-CYLINDER-HEAD-NEW-951-952-3-0L-TURBO-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem588918073cQQitemZ380257175356QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Is a brand new turbo head such a find? Perhaps Baz Hart would like it for his project!

I'm pretty sure that Porsche would still have a small stock of these, but you wouldn't want to ask the price []

It's unsure from that ad exactly what it is. He states it is from a 944S 2.7, yet there is no such thing.

An S is a 16V 2.5 and the 2.7 was an 8V.

That head is definately an 8V but I can't find the part number shown on the photo in PET 944.104.310.2R

My copy of PET has the 2.7 head down as part number 944.104.040.02

From the look of the inlet manifold ports it's a 2.7 head as they look the same as mine and they differ from those on the 2.5 as I found out when I bought the wrong gaskets!

Yes, 2.7 head, with wide intake ports and specific coolant passage in front.

So does the turbo inlet manifold bolt straight up to this and needs the runners opening up to match the bigger ports?

Yes, the runners have to be widened. I had this done by the workshop that checked/prepared my 3.0 engine parts, but I think anyone could do it with a dremel or something similar.

Oh good so at least it is definately a 2.7 head [:D]

This is the same that I have and just to give a price comparison mine cost me £500 second hand five years ago

I would make a guess that the seller is John from Vitesse Racing. I might be wrong but the seller's name bears a strong resemblance.

Patrick, have you seen the other items listed for sale? Looks like a general store

And what about the exhaust ports?

I know the 2.7 exhaust valves are the same size as the turbo, but the ports must be different in some way - they don't have the turbo's ceramic liners, but are they the same size?

Is the bore the same as the turbo? You can see where this is going can't you? [:D]

Mind you, what are the chambers like in terms of effect on compression ratio?

No

The Turbo has a 100mm bore and the 2.7 has a 104mm bore and bolts straight onto a 3L block (which is why its so desirable when doing a 3L conversion)

You need to do a bit of welding to make a 2.7 head fit onto a 2.5 block, one of the coolant passages is different

If your going to mate this onto a 3 litre block, I understood that a far cheaper way is to 'adapt' your existing 2.5 head with the extra cooling channels that the 3 litre block has. I think you need to get an extra cooling section machined into the head. I'm sure someone on here will be able to point you in the right direction of a shop that can do this. (I think John at Vitesse told me this when I bought one of his MAF's). I was toying with the idea of increasing the displacement on mine but after looking into all the different ways of doing it I decided they all seemed to expensive for the extra hp gain. (If you find someone though who can convert an existing head then I would also be interested in doing this at the same time)

Depends what you call expensive, yes it's not exactly "cheap" but there aren't many cars that will allow you to do 60-120mph in less than 10s but for the cost of a well-built and tuned 3.0T engine - it's also quite exciting to do that in an "old" 944.

As far as I have observed the shape of exhaust chambers is very similar if not identical between a turbo and a 2.7 head, the only difference I was able to spot was the ceramic liners. I could be wrong though and there may be other small differences, but I didn't spend much time looking into this.
2.7 intake valves are 65mm, which is a bit more than turbo intake valves.
