Factory fitted alarm system

I've just bought & insured my 93 Club Sport through AON on a limited mileage policy. One requirement is that the car has a 'Thatcham CAT2 standard' security system fitted. Enquiring at a few places (including AFN), a CAT2 is an immobilser only, whereas a CAT1 is an alarm/immobilser combination. My car has been fitted with the Porsche immobiliser / ultrasonic alarm system from new. What I can't find out is whether the system fitted to the car is to Thatcham standard. Has anyone else experienced this problem? The last thing I want to do is to have to replace a perfectly adequate original Porsche system. All I need is a piece of paper stating that the alarm fitted to my car is to CAT 2...Until then, AON wont cover me for theft!

If you go to the Thatcham Web Site, there is a list of all rated vehicles and their alarms (plus aftermarket alarms) in PDF format. I just had a quick look, and the standard 968 system is listed in the Cat 2 section. There's an email address and contact number if you need further details. You could also try ringing your local OPC.

Great, thanks Alan

Hopefully it will save me about £400 for something I've already got! I tried my OPC, which is AFN Reading, but no-one had a clue [&:]

My OPC, Chapelgate checked it was working correctly (immobolising the circuits it should) and and gave me a letter stating it was CAT 2 approved for around £15. Its an alarm/immobiliser but the alarm isn't good enough for cat 1.

I would double check with your insurer, unless you have it in writing, that all they want is CAT2. That is pretty unusual nowadays as CAT1 seems to be the standard they all ask for.

When I insured my 968 last year one of the stipulations was that I had to upgrade to a CAT1 alarm.

My 968CS is insured with AON and they accepted the Porsche systemp as fitted. I confirmed with a note from my OPC.

I would be interested to know if they would accept your car on the basis that they have already accepted other 968cs with standard Porsche systems.

Thanks Don

Thats worth knowing. I will try and get a note from my OPC at the weekend and I hope that will be good enough.

Double checked last night and all they do want is a Cat 2 immobiliser...I guess it could have been worse[;)]
