Factory Immobiliser (on later cars?)

I have the dealer (factory?) fitted immobiliser on my car - the one with the little key you have to put into the socket on the steering column.
This hardly ever worked first time and was becoming extremly unreliable. I butchered it to extract it (cut off the round 'face' and it pushes through) and discovered the contacts were not springy and one had actually broken off.
I was able to revive the remaining contacts and it was much better though fragile and Ugly.

I discovered with the help of the titanic forum - new 'keys' (they need the old key to get the code) and sockets (receptacles) are available from

Hamilton & Palmer in Kent Tel: 01732 760022 , Fax: 01732 760033
(Though if you want a Porsche labelled 'key' you need to go through your OPC)

I ordered my socket yesterday, it arrived this morning £21.15 including VAT and delivery. the key is quite tight in the new one (it didn't touch both sets of contacts in the old one on the new one they hold the key).

There is a join in the wiring behind the cubby under the radio where the alarm LED joins the loom - it was easy to join the new cable in here once the old one was removed.

Half hour job, and the immobiliser is reliable again,

Tony

Tony i dont want to pi55 on your post but i got a replacment from the OPC @ £17.50!!!

Looks like the OPC is the place to go then! funny cos I paid 17.50 for my spare key from an OPC (almost 3 years ago) but I am sure someone on Titanic recently paid more and had to wait much longer,
Tony

edited to add

Just found the post he paid over £44 (from OPC) for 2 and had to wait 3 months, someone else bought a key from Kent, same price as socket, next day service. (also OPC's get the parts from Kent as well)

Still either way its worth replacing the socket if the immobliser wont play.
