Failed MOT

In all the years I have had my 993 it has never failed an MoT. Reason - Brake pedal rubber had "insufficient traction surface remaining" !!! Still I can forgive it as it's 17 years old and 180k miles now. New rubber from OPC being sent by post - £3.50. Test centre said they would waive the retest fee!!!!!!!

John, just one rubber in 180k miles! Must be those fine leather shoes or something. I seem to wear out my brake rubber in 30k!

Thanks Maurice - I feel a bit better when you didn't notice things as well.

Hi Mark - yes I'm sure I haven't replaced it before and usually drive in trainers !! Mind you it's all 40 limits in the New Forest so the brakes aren't needed much.

I envy your roads in Scotland - we often holiday near Kinloch Rannoch and roads very quiet and great to drive out of season.

Hi,

our 993 with 125k miles just went through MOT - but had the worn brake pedal rubber as an 'advise' comment[;)] - obviously a lighter foot! ( or another 55k to go! ) - better get some trainers . . . [&:].

Is the brake pedal rubber one of the new items included in this years changes to the MOT. or has it always been part of the test?

I have NEVER heard of a car failing the MOT because of a worn pedal rubber! What happens with those cars fitted with "boy racer" metal pedals? They seem to get through......[8|]

EDIT: Quite right though...this from the testers manual:

Foot brake pedal antislip provision/
missing/ loose/ deteriorated/ worn
smooth

However:

The provision of a pedal rubber which
is itself of an anti-slip material is not
to be regarded as defective if its
design pattern is worn smooth.

Replaced both pedal rubbers and have mot certificate now. Ironically when you remove the rubbers there is a further none slip metal serated surface built in to the actual pedal. German over engineering I suppose.

Find yourself a better MOT station next time, I know I would.

I once got failed because the headlights were out of alignment.

When I asked to be retested with the tire pressures at spec, he said he had to adjust one of them. This was on a car where the adjuster was reachable from the front with a long reach screwdriver.
He had the audacity to charge me £10 (80's value). He's never had any business from me since and never will.

I now use a garage where the mechanic advises me that something will probably fail by the following year if I don't do something and if there is a problem that's new he's very easy to deal with and gives advice on doing the fix if I go DIY.

Dekker- I am quite happy with my garage/mot station thank you very much. I should have noticed the fault and corrected it myself but I am glad they were diligent in their examination.

They would never try and charge me a retest fee as they also look after my other two cars as well and often do little jobs free of charge.
