Failure of Retractable Tow Ball

My retractable tow ball has decided to play up. It was working fine up until December but after sitting in the garage for two months it has decided to stop working. On pressing the button there was slight movement followed by strong clicking. Both lights on the buttons are now flashing but neither button causes any movement - just the clicking noise. The dash shows a warning that the tow ball needs fully retracting! Any ideas anyone??
