Falken v Goodyear decision time

What would you recommend between Falken 453 and Goodyear Eagle F1. Falkens coming in at £343 Goodyears at £395. Sizes are 225/40/17 at front and 255/40/17 at rear for Falkens and 245/40/17 at rear for Goodyears. I have compromised at little on rear width to keep the Goodyear price reasonable.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Not used Goodyear's before and I have Falken's on my Z first time I have used them and for the money - impressed

225/45/17 at the front?

I have 453's on the boxster - seem pretty good so far. I have falken 912's on the bmw and they seem to be getting very noisy.

I'm getting Federal 595 RS-Rs fitted tomorrow in 225/45/17 and 255/40/17.

Road legal trackday tyres, 8mm of tread and ok in the wet too - getting them as carting a set of track wheels around and changing them on and off gets pretty boring pretty quickly!

I wanted Yokohama AD08Rs but the rears 245/40/17 are out of stock in Europe :(

Edit: the Federal's are only 6.5mm new.

The Falkens, are a good tyre.
I used the 452,s on my 968 to great effect..
BUT I also used the Goodyears GSD3,s [unfortunately NLA now] And they were a much better tyre...

Only dilemma I can see is that you cant seem to get the rears in 255/40/17 in the Goodyears...

I also had some 452,s on my old E46 BMW they were highly rated, but they did get a tad noisy later in life, and the BMW lads don't seem to like the latest 453,s for some reason...

Why not try some Toyo,s??

Oh joy of joys,, tyre hunting....[;)][;)][8|][8|]

Dave, order placed so no going back now. Went with Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2's 225/45/17 and 245/40/17 for the back. They seem to have better reviews than the 453's which as you say seem not to be as popular as the 452's. At the end of the day I suppose 4 quality tyres for less than £400 isn't bad.

I was going to say, in your shoes for the small difference in price I would probably go with the Goodyears.

Saying that, most 'budget' but renowned brands are not all that different in price these days. I know when I bought 2 front tyres for my 944 Falkens and Kumhos were also into 3 figures per tyre. Saying that, I'd probably still go for Falkens and Kumhos over Toyos mind you.

Falkens. Had the 452 on my 944 for over 5 years (about 5000 miles per year) Just changed the rears to the new 453s.
Even better and run quieter as well.
I run the same tyre sizes as the original poster and I am more than happy with the performance. Very predictable cornering.

Used GoodYears on many cars and always been pleased with them. Seem as good as all other premium brands.

Not saying they're better than Falkens (never tried those), but sure you won't be unhappy with GYs.

Mixing social networks here El Dave, but Ive been looking at Nankang NS-2Rs because the Federals still seem to be splitting where their tread is joined...

I saw that but it seems to be under extreme high temperatures, I'm not quick enough to see those ;)

Id heard that it was a thing of the past and have been rebuked for mentioning it on PH, only to see that its back again and Im not sure that they were being pushed that hard. They certainly weren't being worked as hard as they would be on my car as I like ensure that the car isn't overtyred (which a 255 certainly is).

A certain specialist recommends these for road cars. From reading the reviews on other forums etc. (One chap in the Clio 182 circles noted that the NS-2Rs were almost 2 seconds a lap quicker than the Goodyear Eagle F1s on the same car) they do seem to be a great performance tyre, if you can live with the slightly poorer tyre life (but then some brands seem to have the grip vanish quickly) in addition to the additional tyre noise (albeit, not as bad as more track orientated tyre like the Toyo R888s, where it does sound as if your wheel bearings are failing!).

One issue I see with the above tyres however are the limited sizes they are produced in. I shall probably fit a set to the 205 in my signature once the R888s wear out, although they are produced in very few usable sizes for the 944.

The NS-2Rs appear to be greatly superior in the wet too, going on their rating. A little dearer too, at £92 Vs £96 for 225/45/17.

£124 for R1-Rs and £162 for R888s! The Toyos are a bargain in 195/50/15s (in fact theyre cheaper than the upstarts) but the larger sizes are comically priced.
