hi i had a checkup the other day or rather the 993 did,
& was advised to get both belts changed.
is it an easy job if you dont know what your doing ?
whats the best thing to do ?

You need the special tool, and the correct belts, and proceed slowly, replacing everything the way you found it, including the shims which are used for tensioning the belts. In all, it's a good DIY fix.

Special tool? If you can do this on a Beetle, surely you can do it on a 993...[:D]

Hi

I changed my belts a few years ago now. I had all the tools except the 5mm Hex Bit. Picked one up from Halford in a set!
Fairly easy to do. Just remember where the shims came from!

I used P-car.com All the info you need is there including part numbers and tools. Link below

thanks for that i will have a go,
very very carefully, i might even take digi pics as i go to make sure !

The special tool is a 12 point male torx type wrench, available from your friendly Porsche Centre. It holds the alternator spindle while you loosen the holding nut. I don't know anything about beetles, but you won't get very far without one. It is certainly not a hex type.

If you read the P-Car article you will see the special tool referred to in step 4.

"(4) Using the Porsche special tool# 999 571 052 02 and a 24mm wrench to loosen the alternator shaft bolt. The special tool holds the shaft in place to prevent it from spinning while you break the nut free. "

Right at the top of the p-car article is a picture of the actual tool you will need: I guess you could get something similar from Snap-on etc., but it's probably easier and cheaper to buy the genuine Porsche one. It should actually be included in the tool toll, I believe, perhaps Maurice can clarify.

hi had a look at my tool kit & guess what no tool !
what a s**t
you said to undo shaft bolt, mines got a nut on it, is this correct ?
so a trip to halfords is now on my chrismas wish list !

You need to use the Torx tool and the spanner. It holds the alternator spindle while you loosen the holding nut

Dave - look closely at the aternator spindle (it's in the centre of the big engine intake fan) - and you'll see where the special tool fits. I doubt Halfords will have one to fit, but you never know. They certainly sell 3/8" torx drivers, but you might struggle for clearance with a standard 3/8" ratchet. In the interests of scientific investigation, I will try later to see if my 3/8" snap-on ratchet and torx drivers will do the job.

My six point T50 torx driver does fit, but not very well. I think there is a risk of stripping the spindle if any force is applied. I think the best advice is to buy the proper part from Porsche, using the part number above.

That is because it is not a Torx bit. I believe it is called (multi)spline and you can buy this but I cannot tell you the size. I bought the original tool - I did not get one with mine so perhaps it was not supplied originally. It isn't expensive and the belt chage was relatively painless but mine only has 2 belts - fan/alternator and the aircon belt. You can buy the tension gauge if you look at this thread http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=397334.

Yes. Have to agree with all the above. I had to buy the tool from Porsche many years ago, because there wasn't one in my tool roll. It only cost about a tenner as I recall.

PS - it is an essential tool, and I believe everyone should carry one, as it stops you being stranded like I was recently, not because I didn't have the tool, but because I didn't have a spare belt ! Check the condition of your belts, and carry spares.

If you've got the tool, then there is at least a chance the recovery guy can help you, because he will most likely have a belt to fit, at least to get you home. If you haven't, then it's a flat bed trailer for you.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the 993 tool is the same as the one for the 964, it's many years since I sold my 964, so my memory is pretty vague now, but I remember being miffed that I had to fork out for a new tool for the 993, having previously bought one for the 964 !

What a palaver, when all you want to do is change a belt []
