Fan Control

Hi I have a 1984 Targa and the switch for the 3 speed blower fan on the dashboard isn't working. I am not 100%sure which Fuse and Relay controls the switch, I have tried swapping the 1st/2nd relay (1st being nearest the window screen) and the 9th fuse. The cigarette lighter which I believe is on the same fuse works. Any help will be gratefully received.

The 3 speeds are controlled by the switch selecting a different resistor. The resistor module is prone to failure and is often the cause of problems. The fan motor itself could also be at fault.

Hi

My fan also packed up last weekend. I have checked the fuse etc and all is OK.

Geoff, you mention a different resistor. Where is this located please?

It's been a while since I had one of these cars but here goes. If your sure that the switch is operating OK. Then the resistor pack complete with thermal cut-outs (also a possible failure cause) are located in the fresh air box assembly (the box structure on the front bulkhead accessed from the front compartment) with the fan. Fan speeds 1 and 2 use series resistors whilst speed 3 is direct feed to the motor. If the resistors overheat due to partial motor seizure the thermal bi-metalic cut-outs will activate. My guess is that if the fuse and switch are working and all the speeds are inactive it'll be the fan motor. Good luck.
If anyone knows better than my memory please advise.
