Fan problems

Just replaced he infamous radiator temp switch and also replaced the thermostat at it as it was also knackered. Both were an absolute bar-steward of a job!! Why is it that on these cars even the most simple jobs are a pain in the backside?! Anyway I noticed that the fan wasn't functioning properly. I believe the fan has two speeds, one higher speed when the engine is on and a slower speed for when the fan runs on after you switch the engine off to minimise battery drain. My fan only seems to work on the slower speed irrespective of when the engine is on or not. The fan cuts in and cuts out normally and i've never had any problems with the engine running hot so I think the problem is electrical and something to do with the ignition side of the circuit - maybe something to do with the immobiliser. Has anyone had a similar problem and can they suggest how and where I start to track down this problem??
