Fan question

I did a quick search on the 997 forum but couldn't find an answer as to whether this is normal:

After a drive between the showers this morning I put the car back in the garage and stopped the engine "" no fan operation apparent at this stage. When I returned a few minutes later to check the oil level on switching the ignition on (but without starting the engine of course) I was quite surprised to hear the engine bay fan start up. I've had cars in the past that would keep the cooling fan running for a while after switching off but this is different - with the ignition off the fan stops.

Anyone else noticed this?

snarf,

Not experienced exactly what you describe but I dont think its a problem.

The engine was obviously on the cusp of needing additional fan cooling when you switched it off and then having sat without cooling air flowing through the rads etc for a few minutes it warmed up some more and jumped at the chance for the fan when you came back.

Simple.

Yves, thanks for the feedback. I guess what I was concerned about was whether the fan should be operating independently of the ignition status, as per my experience with other cars, and not just when switched on. I suspect it is operating the way Porsche intended as I can't imagine how a fault could manifest itself in this way, given modern production technology, but such is the nature of our relationship with these cars that it brings out all these irrational fears and I wanted the reassurance of knowing that mine's the same as other 997s[&:].

Allan,

While I was reading my manual last night[8|] (anorak I know), I noticed it does say that the fans can activate whilst the ignition is off (both radiator and engine compartment fans). However, I have experienced exactly the same thing happen on my car as you have described. As Yves has eluded to, if the temp is within a certain range it is likely that the fan will only activate when the ignition is on. I think if the temp goes out of this range, the thermostat will activate the fan independently of the ignition circuit. My old Saab 900 Turbo used to do both of these things. So you have nothing to worry about!

So does my Boxster S (and so did my old FIAT X1/9 24 years ago! I'd often get people telling me my car was "making a funny noise"[&:] - No, it's just the engine compartment fan...)

And I thought I knew the manual by heart! I'll have to revisit this. Thanks (to you and Mark) for confirming that my experience is not unique.
