Fan speed switch problem

This has happened twice to me now but is worrying me. I'll get in the car and turn the fan speed switch to speed position 2 or 3 and nothing happens, there is no increase in fan speed. I'll turn the switch to position 4 and sure enough it will come on full blast and when I select speed 3, 2 and 1 after than everything works fine. Anyone had this problem before? That whole heater unit seems to be a single sealed mechanism so I guess if the switch is knackered I can't just replace the switch on its own?

Cheers.

Sounds like you need a new resistor pack. It's under the plastic shroud at the back of the engine bay, directly above the cigarette lighter. It's a 4 inch long cylinder of wire held in place by a few screws. Sometime you can clean them up but mine was falling apart - Porsch-apart sold me a replacement for about a tenner

Have seen same in my car, also assumed the switch, but - you learn something every day.

What I have found is the more the fan is used the less often it "plays up" but I will now locate a new resistor.

Mine played up last year but i cleaned it up with a bit of white spirit and it worked ok after.

Hi, Mine fails to work on 1,2 & 3 and only 4 works with full power. A new resistor pack, I guess. Thanks for the tips.

Cheeky!! I assume it is part of the heater/fan system?

Scott,
Its a remotely mounted component, necessary due to its requirement to be really well ventilated. Its about the same shape as a Marker Pen with wire wound around the outside and two (yellow I think) wires and a plug connection into the cars wiring loom. It is a ceramic tube, which clips into a light metal frame to hold it gently. (No screws) It is located under the plastic shroud which covers the Heater fan and wiper motor.
Paul, correct me if I'm telling this wrong pls.

I recall a similar component on a Mk2 Golf.

Not quite right:-

As noted, it is under the heater shroud at the rear of the engine bay over the cigar lighter (good analogy).

It is a white ceramic plate aprox 1" x 3" held in with two screws.
The plate plugs into a socket similar to an old domestic wired fuse
On the underside of the plate are several resistor coils.

For some reason the connections seem to fur up a bit so taking it out and cleaning the connection prongs is often all it needs to get it working again.
