FAO Peter (PJS917) ABS pump question

Hi Peter,

I remember a while back you said that you had to replace your ABS Pump, because the windscreen washer reservoir leaked onto it.

Can you remember if it triggered the ABS light on your dash?

I've had my specialist look at the ABS on my 968 while it was in for its service - he wasn't able to put it in to the place where he normally gets the ABS tested, as they were too busy, but he tried new speed sensors, relays and and a new control unit and the ABS still isn't working. The light isn't coming on, though if he removes one of the relays or cables it is (so the light does work)

The only thing which he hasn't replaced is the pump...as he didn't have a spare and new ones are about a grand! We both suspect it's the pump (even though it does whirr up when driving off and when the ABS is needed)

If your pump was seized and the ABS light was not coming on, then it may point at it being the pump with my car. Though the windscreen washer reservoir hasn't been leaking...

Cheers,

Marv

Marv,

You are right my pump did seize and I replaced it with a 2nd hand one that cost about £75.00 and I have had no problems since. It did trigger the light on the dash as soon as the pump tried to do its checks but failed because it was not working. It is several years since it happened so my memory is a little rusty.

It does not sound like your pump as you can hear it on start up, Are you consistently locking a particular front wheel under braking or is it random? If it is one side only check the sensors and toothed wheel on the locking side are all clean and functioning first. If the locking is random then it does point more to the pump.

Thanks Peter. I only ever felt the passenger side wheel lock up (car is LHD) but my specialist informs me that both sides are locking up. I've read up on it quite a bit and most of the time people who have experienced the same problem have ended up sorting the problem by replacing the pump. I've managed to get a second hand one for £90, so when it arrives, I'll get my specialist to book it in to have the properly ABS tested and if it is the pump then I'll have one to replace if it's needed, if not, then I should be able to sell it on what I bought it for.

Just a quick update - had this sorted a few weeks ago. The pump turned up from the 'states. Looked like it had never been used!

Booked my car and they replaced the pump. Problem now solved. They reckon it's more than likely that the valves within the pump weren't working/reacting fast enough.
