Today I sold my 993 after much deliberating. A sad day indeed after 8 years of ownership.I got incredibly attached to the car. I have bought a 996c4s in its place. Yes whilst it is a very different car in so many ways the c4s does tick a lot of boxes for what I need at the moment.
I wanted to thank you all for your help and advice on so many posts and the feeling that came with being part of such an enthusiastic group. Its been a real pleasure and I have a feeling I may well be back in the future.
Many thanks
Seb

Sorry to see you are leaving the fold.

I suspect that with the current prices of 993's a number of us are having similar thoughts. You can get a lot of 996 for half the cost of a 993.

Out of interest, what were the boxes that the C4S ticked?

And the high risk of bore scoring, IMS failure and RMS and of course dont forget the dreaded depreciation.....

As I use it everyday in London, the parts replacements on the 993 were becoming more regular (and expensive). I wanted something that is a little more refined to drive everyday (arguably some might say boring!) has air con, hopefully lower running costs, more comfortable, heated seats, electric seats etc....
Apart from the fact I love the back end, and yes, its not as good looking as the 993 overall but I couldn't have both!.

mine certainly cost a lot to maintain, and jaz at JZM just didnt think it would work as a daily driver which was what I needed-hence the more modern machines
still loved the car and shape and wouldve loved to keep it for weekends ,but with 5 kids university the maths didnt work []
maybe some day......

...I have a heavy heart, I considered this a couple of years ago, but just could not do it. The 996 and 997 are too different.

Personally, I know how you felt and yes the costs are getting utterly stupid. I had the engine rebuilt last year. The cost of ownership is hard, but the way I consider it is if I drive her less now I could save a small fortune and buy a younger model to perform the donkey work and drive the 993 when I feel a need for a proper drive. I have had so many offers of purchase, but I know there is nothing that could provide that gritty bellowing sound and the joy that comes with it. - Mine has factory fitted Aircon so I am lucky, I am just getting the suspension upgraded to the KW Variant 3. Hopefully, an aspect of the refinement via the investments made will prove rewarding. Who knows, you may own again.

I think you are deluding yourself if you think a 996 will cost less to run than a 993. My comments are based on a 10 year 996 vs a 20 year 993. The quality of the parts in s 993 last so much longer
I.e .Suspension most cars are still on there original, 996 two sets of coffin arms? set of shocks. suspension arms.
A/C maybe second condensor, 996 two sets and don't forget at least one of rads
Engine rebuilds none versus one or sue one any second.
Servicing 996 a bit cheaper and longer intervals
Depreciation one +10% pa other less 10% pa
etc etc

I have to agree, the 996 4S is my choice of replacement vehicle after having 993`s, much easier to live with on a daily basis. The 996 4S is a good car they are generally well specced, have lots of toys and to be had for a good price at the moment.
Less than 5% have engine issues, there are a lot around now that have done more than 150k and still going strong. I`ve seen a few 993`s that have had engine rebuilds at less than that mileage. Let`s face it, no Porsche is ever going to be cheap to own.

As you say if you drive it less now.....mine was a daily driver in town and on motorway and with 150,000 miles on it, it,sadly it didnt make sense financially. Mind you with the c4s now and having to replace the radiators, condenser, sort out the switchable exhaust etc. I'm starting to wonder!
