Fault codes and readers

Have been trying to find information on 996 fault codes and readers on the forum without success.
I know 'universal' code readers are cheaply available for vehicles since the EU forced a standard on the motoring industry a few years ago. I have a fault code reader for my BMW bike.

Can these universal readers be used on 996s? If so from what year? Any information gratefully received.

I had trouble with my 1998 C2 using some generic handheld scan tools, and I think it is because the DME version 5.2.2 used in the early RoW (pre-egas) cars isn't truly OBD2 compliant. Your C4 has DME version 7.2, which should be OK with almost any code reader or scan tool.

More expensive than a code reader, but the best DIY product is the Durametric scanner (www.durametric.com) which is Porsche-specific, and will do a great deal more than a code reader. It will interrogate all the other systems on the car, and reset fault codes on those systems too.

I've got a Durametric (amongst other diagnostic stuff) and if you are anywhere near me I'd be happy to demo it for you.

(No affiliation - just a happy user).

+1 for durametric, it works well and they are a very helpful company.
Bought mine direct from their web site from US - arrived very quickly - but that was back when 1 pound = 2 dollars!
