Can anyone tell me please as to whether buying the £39.99 obd 2 reader would be ok for the amateur. In other words, as my battery voltage dropped too low my battery light and ABS light came on. Will this reader delete these lights and is the process easy or is it simply best left to the experts. If used incorrectly could i make matters worse.

thanks.

Unfortunately generic code readers won't clear an ABS fault - only engine faults. The other problem is that the UK 1998 C2 isn't truly OBD2 compliant, and some code readers won't display the fault codes.

Thanks Richard...thought i would probably be way off track. Lots of guys are recommending PCT as a good place to get a service so may probably ask them if they can sort my alternator out. Looks very difficult to get to or is this in fact an easy job to do once car is jacked up.

It's a fiddly job: Disconnect battery Disconnect MAF and remove airbox Remove drive belt Disconnect and remove vacuum switchover valve Remove the belt roller Undo alternator mounts Turn the alternator and gently lift out towards the back of the car Undo the electrical connections Lift out alternator As Tommy Cooper used to say - Just like that! (Showing my age here). Book time is an hour. Probably two if you haven't done it before!

You make it sound so easy. What about Get up the nerve, lie on trolley, ponder for half an hour etc etc. Many thanks Richard, i had no problem working on my 944 for many years. Its just the fact that the carrera i suppose can be quite expensive if i get things wrong. Have changed brake pads, brake discs etc but when i get near the engine ie alternator.....can anything go wrong. I may get up the nerve if the weather changes. Many thanks again. ps Would you say that this job is easier than changing the brake discs/rotors. If so i may well attempt.

Many thanks for the instructions richard. Looks within my ability so looking good for the weekend if weather is not too bad. Any recommendations from anyone as to the best people to go to for a refurbished alternator? I'm in the west midlands, birmingham not too far from me. I know eurocar parts exist there as do GSF. Am i right in assuming buying on the web when including costly postage and packing is not worth it! Cant wait to get the car back to normal as is used daily. Missing the drive already
