Faulty alternator/heat shield

Can alternators/power steering pumps become noisy?I seem to have developed a intermittant metal "grinding" sound on startup which seems to dissappear quite quickly within a couple of minutes - it's not constant and seems to be from the bottom of the engine bay.I've done the old "stethoscope" trick with a screwdriver to my ear and i don't think it's my water pump or from the belts area.
I'm thinking maybe alternator or power steering pump, although it's not a groaning sound like you usually get with a ps pump.Anyone on the forum had these go faulty and become very noisy before?
