Faulty fuel Guage

My fuel gauge is a bit wonky as well. It's up and down like a w**ores draws which mostly seems to be related to the incline of the road but the size of the deflection can be upto half the tank i.e. it might be showing 3/4 full then after a bit of a hill it will be showing 1/4. Also it takes a good minute or so to wake up after filling the car. I did get my reserve light to come on recently though which is a first. I've got used to it but tend to use the oddometer to tell me when I need to fill up. There is not alot in the fuel gauge loop so it will either be the gauge itself or the sender. If you want to start looking at it yourself I suppose your first step could be to remove the binnacle and give the electrical contacts behind the gauge a good clean up (in fact all of them while your in there) to make sure it's not a ropey electrical connection that is causing too much resistance. You could also try applying 12v (or whatever voltage gives full scale deflection) across the terminal to see if you can get the needle to move to the full position which would confirm if the gauge is working properly. If these rudementary tests check out then it's probably your sender.

From past experience (on lesser cars) it's more likely to be the sender than the guage.

I agree it is more likely to be the sender, however it's easier to check the guage first and it gives you an opportunity and excuse to fit the Flamingeye kit!!!

Funny you should mention Dash lights i have just ordered 3 LED wide angle lens blue lights as a direct replacement for original bulbs!!
I will keep you posted on the results
Nick

If it's the usual dim dash problem you have it will be due to the silver reflector coming off, not the light source itself.

Darren spent a fair bit of time researching what works and what doesn't before he developed the Flamingeye kit. YMMV of course.

To be honest just going to change them and see what it looks like, only just bought the car and not even seen the dash lights yet!!!!

Hi Nick,

Sorry I never twigged who you are until now !!!!. I now know !!! To answer the question of the fuel gauge, when I first had your car the red light was always on and the needle was off the gauge... So a new sender was fitted and all was well for a while just until the engine blew !!!!. I didn't do any more than that. If you have a look on Clarks garage there is a procedure to check both the sender and gauge.

If you check my ebay feedback I think its still on there so you can see what was fitted...

I am hopeful your having more luck with the car than we did []
