Member News
Welcome to new members Peter Liptrott (Westhoughton - 997 C4 S), Kellie & Tony Sharpe (Higher Whitley - Cayenne GTS), Robert Yarwood (Crew - 996 GT3) and Antony & Andrew Scarborough (Hindley - Boxster 2.7). Albeit you have been members for only a short time, you are equally as welcome as any other member at our 8 February Club Night (see below) and any contribution you might wish to make to the discussion will be taken into consideration. If you are unable to attend, your fellow R5 members and I will look forward to meeting you at one of our other forthcoming events.

Keri and I became grandparents for the second time when our daughter Rebecca had her second child, William (a brother for Edward), on 22 January. Mother and child are well, but husband Richard seems to be struggling with lack of sleep!

Next R5 Event
The next R5 event is our February Club Night, at The Deanwater Hotel, starting at 2000. (See FORTHCOMING R5 EVENTS below for more information.)

David Gilhooley Memorial Fund
I am pleased to be able to inform R5 members that the Region's fund-raising activities during 2011 enabled us to make a donation of £100.00 to the David Gilhooley Memorial Fund. The late David Gilhooley had two passions: osteopathy and Porsche cars. Thus it was that he devoted 30 years of his life to the furtherance of osteopathic medicine, teaching at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO), and was for many years the Club's 911 Carrera RS Register Secretary; and the aforementioned Fund, earmarked by the Club for its 2011 charitable endeavours, supports a treatment room at the BSO's new clinic dedicated to David's memory.

FORTHCOMING R5 EVENTS
8 February: Club Night
Given the importance of this Club Night to the future of the Region I hope you will not take it amiss that I am again repeating what you may have already read more than once.

Most of you will be aware by now that I am retiring from the role of Regional Organiser (RO) at the end of April and that as yet it has not been possible to identify an eligible R5 member willing to take over that role. In addition, come 1 May only two members of the current Committee will still be in office. Hence, apart from the usual announcements, this Club Night will be devoted to consideration of how the Region is to be run from 1 May and, hopefully, to recruiting additional members to the Committee. For that process to be both effective and democratic the views of as many members as possible need to be taken into account, so please do attend and help us to find a way for R5 to continue to operate.

The Club organisational structure requires each Region ordinarily to be run by an RO, not least because there has to be a single point of contact for communications from both the Directors and the staff at Cornbury House, and likewise one person has to accept responsibility for accounting for expenditure from the Region's annual financial allocation. (It is also customary for the RO to write monthly reports for Porsche Post.) That said, whilst it is clearly preferable for the Region to identify a new RO, there is some scope for flexibility. It is widely recognised that the role of RO is onerous, and one way to ease that burden is for two members to share it, either jointly or as RO and Assistant RO. Another option is for the Region to be run for an interim period by a Committee, without an official RO, in the hope that one of the Committee members will in due course accept the role of RO. Whatever way forward is chosen, the aforesaid organisational requirements have to be met.

26 February: "˜Porschemeirion' Drive & Lunch
As already announced on more than one occasion, our first outing of 2012 is to Portmeirion Village in North Wales (go to www.portmeirion-village.com for more information). Rendezvous at 1000 for coffee at The Smoker Inn, Plumley, WA16 0TY (on the A556 between Knutsford and Northwich); in readiness for a 1030 departure on the c85-mile drive to Portmeirion. (NB There will be a loo-stop at about half distance.)
Arrangements have been made for lunch in the Portmeirion Hotel at the concessional rate of £23.50 per head, inclusive of free entry to the Village and gardens. It is necessary to book in advance, pay a deposit of £10.00 per head and pre-order your choice of meal from the attached menu. Members who wish to have lunch but have yet to book should contact me, preferably by e-mail, no later than February 15.
A party of members is staying overnight in the Village, so as to make the most of the occasion and enjoy more of the North Wales' scenery on the Monday. Accommodation for that night may still be available in either the Village or Hotel, and any other members wishing to extend their visit should contact the Hotel by "˜phone on either 01766 772411 or 01766 770228.

OTHER CLUB ACTIVITIES
Please note this information is provided solely to alert you to other Porsche events at venues not too far from home that you may wish to attend. It does not mean any formal R5 presence is planned.

24 "" 26 February: Race Retro, Stoneleigh
The theme of this year's Race Retro is Porsche's racing and rallying history. See February PP for more information.
4 March: Cornbury House Open Day
This Open Day will feature a car detailing demonstration by Sportscar Protection principal Dave Bowerman.
9 March: 12th Anniversary RS Track Day, Oulton Park
