Some of you may have noticed that the 944 Register column was conspicuous by its absence in Porsche Post. This was due to an editorial oversight, and the text that should have been printed is below.

I'm writing this month's column a couple of days before Christmas while sitting in Stockholm airport. Looking out of the window all I can see is falling snow, and last month's thoughts concerning winter precautions for your 944 are starting to seem horribly relevant.
Turning to thoughts of warmer weather, plans are now well under way for the '944s in Scotland' event. At the time of writing we have a small number of places left (specifically, spaces for three couples plus a small number of children), so please let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to attend (e-mail me at 944@porscheclubgb.com).
The Scotland event follows the style of the extremely successful 'Grand Tours' organised by Martyn Cockram in 2002-3 albeit with a changed location. We have taken the step of renting an entire country house on a self-catering basis for the week commencing 28th May 2005. The main body of the trip is from Saturday 28th to Tuesday 31st May 2005, but those participating are welcome to enjoy the facilities of the house until Saturday 4th June 2005 if they so desire. There will be an organised series of day-tours from the house which is situated close to Perth for the four days of the 'official' trip, with some further informal drives for the rest of the week. Attendance on all of these is optional, though it is expected that those coming will participate in at least some if not all of the trips.
Cost for the accommodation itself will be around £450 per couple sharing a double or twin room for the weekend, with the optional extension to Saturday 4th June being free. More details of Newmiln House, our chosen accommodation, can be found at http://www.scottscastles.com/detail.php?id=16 .
In addition to the Scottish Tour, we are also planning a number of shorter events, which will include at least some of the following:
Attendance on the PCGB Cotswold Rally (Sunday 8th May)
Hastings run based on last year's successful event
Dyno day test your car's power and torque figures. Please e-mail Paul Smith (diver944@yahoo.com) if you'd be interested in this.
Attendance at one of the Porsche Club race days (as spectators!)
When I did a quick straw poll of 944 drivers last year, a Limit Handling Day with Don Palmer also seemed to be of interest. I have now got some prices from Don and it works out at £395 per person for a one day course if four people attend the day, which includes the services of Don and one of his fellow coaches. Now £395 is a lot of money, and you'd expect to get some pretty excellent training for this. Having driven with Don, I can assure you that this is exactly what you will receive. There is really no substitute for having an expert coach next to you talking you through the manoevres and helping you to understand exactly how to get the best from yourself and your vehicle at extreme speeds but in the safe environment of a purpose-made environment with large run-off areas.
More details of what you can expect are at http://www.donpalmer.co.uk/carcontrol.htm or give me a call on 07714 672077 to talk about what's involved.
On a different topic, I'm pleased to say that the installation of my new Toad alarm went smoothly. The original alarms in our cars now being upwards of twelve years old, and having had a temptingly low-priced insurance quotation from a company that required a Thatcham Category One alarm fitted as a condition of the policy, I bit the bullet and asked independent Porsche specialist Jon Mitchell (www.9xx.co.uk ) to supply and install the unit for me. I feel happier now knowing that my car is protected by up-to-date security, and the net cost after factoring in the reduced premium from the new insurance policy was only £100.
I hope to see many of you at the various events this year, and please let me know if there's an event that you'd like to see on the calendar or which you'd like to organise.
