PCGB Region 13 Hereford, Worcester & Shropshire
Region 13 Report for February 2012-02-01.
On the 28th, as you know, from the last report, we were unable to go ahead with the Morgan talk, so I had to make some revisions. Last meeting, I suggested a talk on gliding, in anticipation of a flight, later in the year, which received a vote of agreement.
Our last meeting at the Chateau, was an emergency arrangement, made within the space of a couple of hours. Therefore our February meet was in fact our inaugural meet. We were very pleased to welcome members from Region 9, including Paul Seagrave, to give us support for our new venue. I hope they will make this a regular addition to their calendar. Many postcoded West Midlands members, are, in fact, in our catchment area, in some instances, depending which side of a main road you live.
So I set out to prepare a gliding talk. Mindful of both the facts that one's own enthusiasm for a hobby can perhaps overbear others after a while and the fact that we are a car club, I decided to expand the talk into a comparison or the relevance between gliders and mainly GP and F1 car design. The two being closely linked with aerodynamics. All in a fairly simple approach.
We started with a slide show of gliders, from fairly early two-seater trainers, to later glassfibre ones and several single-seaters of various ages. On these, I pointed out some features which would be referred to later in the cars.
Then we reverted to a flipchart, on which I sketched various lift and drag components of an aerofoil, illustrating the point at which they act, called the centre of pressure. The latter, being significant in racing car design.
Done with two pages of that, we went on to a discussion on development in F1 design, since the mid 70's. With particular insight into the research and discoveries made by Peter Wright, for Colin Chapman in their own wind tunnel, which they obtained from Williams GP in 1991. Hmm, I'm going on a bit, aren't I ? Well, you should have been there.
I took along about 28 models to illustrate points, including several Porsches and couple of 356A's one being No. 46 which was the first Porsche to enter Le Mans.
I will not annoy the editor by taking up too much space, suffice it to say that our forthcoming events are listed below, with NOTE, some amendments from last time.
At the moment, I am particularly concerned about the lack of response to the Curborough event. If this is not filled sufficiently, I will have three options, cancel; increase the price; or invite others. I know it seems far off, but get in now if you want to go.
Apologies for last month to Ian Crosskell. His first name was wrong (My fault) and there was a mix up with the photograph. He certainly does not look like a row of tables with people sat behind. I am surprised that no-one noticed this !
