Fed up with cleaning my wheels

It seems that I only have to drive a very few miles before my wheels start to get coated with break dust. I've never had an automatic before and I think this problem must be worse as my car is a Tiptronic, I'm sure I must use more breaks rather than using engine breaking.

I've tried Swissvax wheel wax but I can't see it's made much difference.

I was talking to someone who details cars for a living and he said that changing the pads could make a big difference, he mentioned a make of pad but I can't remember what it was. Logically I can't see how this can make much difference as I thought the dust came from the disks rather than the pads.

Can anybody recommend a different make of pad or anything else that might make a difference?
 
Don't use the brakes so much! Failing that I remove the wheels and give them a thorough clean up with de-greaser, then a decent wheel cleaner with a wheel brush.
Then rinse them off and dry. To finish off apply a wheel protector or sealant. Such as supaguard. This protects the wheel and should make the removal of the brake dust much easier.

Not used them on my 996, but EBC Green Stuff brake pads don't produce as much dust, but are quite pricy. Personally I down change using the tip buttons to use engine breaking to slow down anyway.

Update: Sorry just checked and EBC don't do 996 pads!
 
+1 - I also sometimes use the tip buttons to engine brake. I have not notices big issues with brake dust when using the car, although its been tucked up since November[:(]

Remove the wheels,VERY through clean, possibly clay bar as well, then a couple of GOOD quality HARD wax coatings, that won't stop the brake dust from building up but, it is very easy to wash the dust off!
 
Thanks everyone for the advice - I was going to take the wheels off in the spring to give them a clean anyway so I'll have a really good go at them.

Maybe I'll investigate EBC Green Stuff pads when they next need changing.

Interesting comments on engine breaking.

A lot less dust is created in the first place because the discs/pads are harder.
The pads last so long in fact my rears haven't been changed in 10 years and the fronts only because they were down to near 50% (that's with 50+ track days thrown in)

The later generation pccbs use softer pads to further extend the life of the discs - which, in road use, could outlive the car - but still don't create any noticeable brake dust.

Failing pccbs, I'd paint the wheels dark grey [;)]

Oh yes and pre ABD/PSM too (so much less rear brake wear) - it's a 996.2.
