Feedback of Bridgestone Tyres on 996

Hi All,

Given I am having awful trouble sourcing Michelin PS2s at a decent price (many suppliers seem out of stock), does anyone have any feedback regarding running Bridgestone tyres in terms of grip/wear?

Thanks,

Steve

I have Bridgestone S-02A 's on my car and I think they are brilliant. I have just purchased another set of four and the last set lasted about 20,000 miles, which I thought was very good (the last set ran to about 18,000 miles) and I do not hang about or drive like Miss Daisy.

I paid £223.25 including VAT for the rears (295/30/ZR 18) and £135.12 inc VAT for the fronts (225/40/ZR 18).

On a previous car I had (A Mercedes C43AMG) I found that the Bridgestones were cheaper and quiter than the Pirrelli's, but on the Porsche, it was delivered with Bridgestones and I have always run replaced them directly.

But I dont think they are a bad tyre at all. Just dont let the tyre fitter mess around with the settings of the tracking etc if you are happy with the car. A garage did mine once and messed it up and I asked them to change it back in the end and all was good again.

20,000 miles , well done, just changed my rears ( conti's) after 5000 miles cost £550, now have pirelli p zero ( last week £416 ), but after a spirited drive today the psm ( yellow triangle on dash ) is coming on , never had that before , so maybe less grip on pirelli's , great !!

I have so2a's on the turbo
I am happy with them
when they warm up they grip well certainly hooning it around scotland etc
they came with the car wear seems ok
I did have pirellis on my c2 and despite all the motoring journo's going on about them I could never feel completely happy with them with these ones you definately feel the grip of the tyres come to you as they warm
managed to get good prices on them dont get the S03's thye are not supposed to be nearly as good
but beware pain in the arse to change the wire in the bead is tight on the wheel and unless the tyre changer man is experienced he will remove some powder coat from your rim
alas

I am in the process of looking for Tyres, i have Pirelis
Front 225/40/ZR18
Rear 265/35/18

So would those Bridgestones 295/30/ZR18 and 225/40/ZR18 replace my Pirelis ?

Cheers
Steve

The 295/30/ZR18's are only intended for 11" wide rears, as on the C4S or Turbo. I would stick with 265's if I were you, or maybe 285/30/ZR18's if you want a wider rear. Some people fit them for better rim protection, but bear in mind you are going to a non-standard size for a pre-facelift 996. Bridgestones should be available in both sizes.

Typo corrected - thanks Martin!

Daft question time - is there a difference between Z and ZR and is it true you can't mix the N ratings i.e. if you have N3 on the front you shouldn't say put N5 on the rear (I would imagine a left to right mix shouldn't happen either)?

Not daft at all - it is very confusing. According to the letter of the Porsche 'law' you shouldn't use anything but N rated tyres, of the same rating all round. Take a look here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=238650

However, as some N ratings have changed (updated), it can be difficult to get the older rated tyres - if you were fitting a new pair of rears and there was still lots of tread on the front, for example. Michelin have said that is prfectly OK to fit the latest rated Pilot Sports with the previous rated version (but not on the same axle). (Pardon me for not giving specific N numbers, but I'm being lazy not looking it up!) Not sure about other manufacturers though.

AFAIK they are all ZR, it's just that some advertisers just use the Z as an abbreviation. It's definitely a no-no to mix tyres on the same axle.

The issue for most people is how insurance companies view it. When I spoke to mine (Aviva) before I switched to a non-N rated tyre, they were quite happy for me to use whatever I wanted, provided they were the same size, speed, and load rating. I suspect almost every insurance company would say the same, but no doubt there are one or two who might be picky about insisting on an N rated tyre.
