Feedback on Becker Traffic Pro 7820

Hi,
I have the CDR 22 CD player in my car and wanted to upgrade to the Becker 7820 unit (SATNAV). It looks like the CDR 22 and I'm keen to keep the original ambience of the interior.

Does anyone have this unit and what is that Sat Nav like?.....are there any other Single DIN units that would compliment the 996 interior plastics and work well?

Feedback appreciated,
Many Thanks

911 & Porsche World June 2002 for several articles on Becker Sat Nav! I think there may be a problem between pre- and post facelift 996s as the MOST system may affect your choice of unit. The one reviewed was fitted to an early model, but they claim it can be retrofitted to any pre-facelift 996 back to the 912 or 356.

There was a very good article in a recent issue of Total 911 (I think) regarding the fitting of integrated sat nav systems in the 996 etc.

It wasn't very complimentary towards PCM1.

I have Becker Hi-Speed Traffic Pro in a 'facelift' 996 (I think the problems arose with 2003> fibre optics) and it looks great and works extremely well, with regularly updated discs. I would definitely recommend it.

I had mine professionally fitted.

The aerial sits on the centre of the dash close to the windscreen. No drilling, no adhesive, no visible cable, very tidy. Looks like original equipment.

Thanks for the feedback Oliver.
I've found it at caraudiodiscount.com for £380 but they want an extra £250 to fit it saying it would take 4 hours!!!
Can you or anyone recommend an alternative place for purchase/fitting?

Thanks

(It is actually original equipment, except for the Porsche logo)

£380 is a good price, but the fitting sounds expensive.

However, it really is best installed and set by a technician with experience of fitting the system to a 996. Plus you should get a full warranty.

I used www.sempal.co.uk

works a treat, sat nav is good for all over europe (almost!)

fitting is easy except for plugging into the speedo, which is needed for accuracy !

Sempal are also doing it for £380....

I shall give them a ring tomorrow morning...hopefully they can fit it too.

Thanks very much

I hope that the available mapping for the Becker units is better than the outdated crap supplied with PCM SAT/NAV on my 997S.

try and get hold of the official Porsche installation booklet for the becker unit. It's very straightforward using this. Porsche sells the same unit rebadged and has a full installation booklet for it's engineers. Do a web search you might get lucky (hint).I think the unit is not for cars fitted with the MOST bus technology though. The speed signal btw is already in the plug wiring! reversing signal is not but is not really needed. There are a few bit's of simple wiring involved but nothing too taxing. Worst job is fitting gps ariel which takes about 30mins to 1 hour the rest is easy.

Thanks Oliver,

Sempal are doing it for £380 and the fitting will only be £100 + VAT....you've saved me £150!

They are sorting out an engineer to fit it locally to me in Finchley so the warranty is in place too. I specifically asked for someone who had experience of working on 996's.

interesting write up Rob thanks,
i've found a becker 'monza' on ebay which is a non sat nav unit but plays wma/mp3's and looks 'factory' in fact it states it is from a VW. (i'm not bothered about a sat nav unit)

does anyone know if these are any good? compatible with MOST system?

UPDATE:

Had the Traffic Pro fitted yesterday and it's an excellent unit which works out routes quickly, connected easily to the sound system and blends into the interior perfectly!
Highly recommended.
