Ferrari 458 Italia v Porsche Turbo S ...the video

I would be very interested to hear what you thought of the GTRS when you were at Silverstone and how did it compare to the Scuderia and the Radical. The Radicals are certainly very quick but they only weigh 600kg and not much use other than on a track

Well the rain has finally arrived and the long weekend of special time in the 458 is coming to an end, still thinking about the Ace Cafe this evening and will probably go along but not in this 458 of course, not on Porsche night! So what of my thoughts of the two cars.
Ferrari 458 Italia
This highly acclaimed car in the motoring press is immense fun and theatre on the road, the sheer noise of the thing and the downshift noise and rumble especially in race mode can be heard for miles literally and for that reason alone it has to be on the want list for your/my favourite car garage. You want to change gear every few moments just to hear it, so its not suprising I have been to the fuel station twice since Friday and need to go back again in the morning. Whilst I have always admired Ferraris they have never featured high on my real wants list. The build quality is the primary thing that constantly disappoints when compared with German cars and whilst this is so much better than models before it, the evidence is still in the DNA on the 458. The dashboard is better but still you find odd switches around that do unrelated things, why for example put the glove box switch next to the front axle lifter switch? I do like the sat nav build in, mixing between screens is pretty intuitive so no issues there, the sound system is average which is normal for Ferraris but when you have a great sound system with the stereo off I guess its less important. I notice early wear on the car though so its fragile nature still holds true in this model, but again most owners wont use very much so I guess its less of a problem.
This model had standard sports seats which I find uncomfortable personally. The carbon race seats option is by far the best which I have tried in another car and transform the comfort and also drop you a bit lower in the cabin which I prefer. That aside its a great place to be. As always its a fantastic steering wheel with the different settings on the magnatino (or however you spell it), the big red starter button and the wipers and indicators are easy to get used to being buttons not stalks. The lovely big carbon paddles on this version suit the car perfectly and contrast with the carbon wheel and shift lights.
Out on the road, even in dry weather with cold tyres the car struggles to get the power down and squirms around as it gets settled. Once warm though the car seems to move to a different level of traction, you can see the engine, brakes and tyres changing from cold to ideal operating temperature on screen. Its the front tyres that need to be warm to give you more confidence on the road though because the front end is light and only when you get the weight over it through braking does it feel good on turn in. Initiallly its quite scary and totally different to the turbo s which just grips, grips and grips in any condition.
Everywhere I have taken it though it gets open mouthed looks, the bright led running lights adding to the experience for all onlookers and its great sometimes to be in a car like that of course. A dozen different passengers have sat there this weekend in awe mostly and so have shared in the experience that is the 458 Italia.
We have had made the little video courtesy of my son, had other Ferraris and Lamborghini's round to play, taken trips to the Porsche dealership to help a friend picking his car up, then a trip to the local Ferrari dealer who had a great spec new white 458 with carbon race seats ready to go out of the door, which was tempting especially when he said he had a customer looking for a white turbo s who can't find one at the moment so would I sell mine to him, but the head ruled the heart that day and whilst I am thinking seriously about ordering one for a couple of years time, I don't need to decide until January. So the big question is would I really do it? Here are my feelings.
For noise, theatre, looks and absolute feeling and sensation being the driver 10 out of 10, yes probably the best car I have been in to date for that, the Gallardo being very close to that and of course my turbo. It is immensely fast in dry good road surface conditions.
For driving enjoyment on the road 8 out of 10. Its quite edgy on the road, not very comfortable on our rubbish road surfaces even with the soft suspension settings, its tramlines and picks up every rut and doesnt like being on a low throttle, so its quite jerky through town and tiring to drive. The open clear road though and its amazing but that 'open road' is very rare these days.
For build quaility 5 out of 10, early wear is evident, the dash rattles, the trim rattles, the seats squeak, its quite poor really and doesnt feel it will last well. I dont like some of the plastics and metal painted parts either
For everyday supercar running costs, I suspect they will be high on fuel, servicing etc etc.
In comparison I would give my turbo s in the same categories
7 out of 10 for noise, theatre etc etc, maybe being white and with the aerokit helps a bit on looks IMHO, the video we did it sounds ok on full throttle and its amazing on launch, just amazing
8 out of 10 for driving enjoyment but for different reasons, its so fast, so comfortable, so easy to drive fast or slow, just less exciting overall but clinically good by comparison, you have 100% confidence driving is fast whereas the 458 gives me between 50 and 80% depending on conditions. I would accept though it requires more talent to be fast and safe in this car than mine I suspect.
10 out of 10 for build quality, it just oozes out when you sit there and feels so solid by comparison
Amazing low running costs for such performance, probably twice the mpg and less servicing costs
I still would like a 458 everyday in my garage, the dealer trying to tempt me with the folding hardtop 458 due soon although I can't imagine how they keep the gorgeous lines and achieve that or even a Challenge car by the time I want one.
Meanhile I know I have one of the very best all rounders in my garage on this planet today and am happy with that feeling.
What fun being able to try anyway other great machines!

ps I'm also not a fan of the 458. It is just a Sony Playstation! Like the 997 Turbo S, it does do what it says on the box .... brilliantly, but it drives you, not the other way round.
pps I have driven all three quite a lot.
After being in a 458 I looked up several online car video reviews. For them it's all about on the limit handling, quick gear changes, 0-60, torque etc. When I got in it, I couldn't care less about that, but when I drive my GT3 it's all about that.
I actually think your second video captures the sound of the 458 better (see 0:30 onwards), the popping on the overrun lasts for at least a few seconds and is mesmerizing especially from inside the car.

I also think the turbo on launch control sounds better than that in real life. It has a totally different sound, more like an aeroplane taking off, lots of air rushing through mechanical parts, very powerful.
As you say, the 458 is a very theatrical, it's constantly urging you to accelerate, to lift off, then do it again - it's such an addictive experience. The turbo goes about its business at horizon munching speed and is much easier to live with. 2 very different ways to get from A to B.
The 458 is very special, I can't imagine how much better the Challenge version will be (when they sort out the gearbox issues).
