Fibre Glass Front Wings for s2 / Turbo

New steel wings from Porsche aren't cheap and there's hardly an unlimited supply of good quality 2nd hand wings kicking around it would seem.

Anyone have a good experience using fibre glass front wings? One criticism I've heard is poor fit with the front bumper but presumably this isn't a universal issue as I see plenty pictures of track cars with such wings and the fit looks fine. I'd be interested to hear of experiences and whether anyone could recommend a quality supplier?

Hi Steve,
We fitted a fibreglass wing from Club autosport to my father in laws 944 turbo race car which we are preparing. The fit was good. Just make sure you specify that the wing is for a 944 turbo /s2 as they are different to earlier cars. You have to fiddle around a bit drilling holes etc but the end result was good.

I can't remember where my wings came from but there aren't that many options within the UK. Got them and the fibreglass badge panel to a good result in the end but it took litterally 120 man hours at the bodyshop.

It got totally ridiculous and then just the other day the bloody badge panel (which even had added additional fixings to secure it) blew off on the motorway and was never seen again! All together it has been the most enourmous waste of time and money I have ever experienced on a 944 and I would never ever do it again! A good metal basher could patch in and make the typically rusted wings as good as new in under a day. The rear sills on my car were done this way and are fantastic.

Regards,

Ben

I agree with that. I have FG wings, bumpers and bonnet on my race car, I don't think I would bother on a road car. Unless one really needs the weight loss its not really worth the hassle. Will also cause 'issues' with insurance, when I was building up the race car it started out as basically an ultimate track day car (which is what a road legal race car is I guess). I have always had it fully insured for road use with REIS but they were one of only a handful of outfits that would even consider touching the car. Costs me about double what classic car insurance was costing me as well.

Why do they need replacing? If its just the bottoms rusting they can be easily repaired by a good bodyshop to as new condition.

Fiber glass never looks as good as steel even done well, its also flexes alot and can crack. Perhaps ok on a race car where weight is everything but on a road car I dont see the point.

I actually wonder on how much of a weight saving you make with f/g vs metal? I picked up a metal front wing recently and was quite surprised at how light it was.

I've bought a Turbo to restore - there is rot in quite a few places and a few people who have visited Alasdair (SULZERUK) will have perhaps thought this car was destined to be "parted out". Not so. With time, patience and money it'll be living on for many many years I hope. The front wings are pretty rotten and not just at the bottom - but through the arches too. However, I've appreciated all the contributions to this thread and decided to buy a replacement old steel wing for one side (the worst side). Bought from Ebay today. The other side could be "saved" perhaps (or so at least I hope).

Thanks everyone.

I'll be using the car for normal driving and splitting time between the turbo and my s2.
