Fibreglass front wings - fitted

I just got my car back from Eastern Western in Broxburn, West Lothian.

I am very happy indeed. It's been gone for four and a half weeks, and off the road for a couple of weeks prior to that while I got a new exhaust fitted.

Please excuse the rough cameraphone pictures:

So that's a 3" straight through exhaust from the middle back, vented fibreglass front wings, a fibreglass undertray and front spoiler, and a general tidy up of paintwork around the car (including removal of the rear rubber bumper strip to reshape the surrounding metal before fitting it back on).

Now I'm going to enjoy driving the damned thing for a while, before worrying about how to fit the scripted door handles I have waiting at home and swap the lock barrels over.

The guys at Eastern Western have done a sterling job, including priming, drying and resanding the wings eight times before coating and painting. Before that, they cut sections from the built-in support struts inside the wings so that they could adjust the panel curvature and then rebuilt the supports.

From the pictures you would certainly never tell they were fibreglass (apart from the vents of course), but how do you feel they look in person. Are the panel gaps much the same, and how much did the bodyshop guys swear at them until they were happy?

They look excellent! Stupid question but why did you go to these lengths for what looks like a very nice example of a road car?
Also, are these the wings from that German outfit people were discussing a few months ago? Any idea on how much weight you've saved?

The panel gaps are perfect. The bodyshop guys swore at the a LOT. I wouldn't recommend doing these yourself, from what they've told me. I'm happy to go into detail later, when I have time.

There is a very, very slight ripple to reflections in the surface when in bright sunlight. That's the only giveaway that they're fibreglass and not steel "¦ but I'm putting that down to the extreme skill of the bodyshop guys.

The weight saving is just a bonus to me, it wasn't the real point. I wanted the looks, and I wanted to replace rotten steel wings with something that wouldn't ever rust again.

I'm keeping the old wings to have repaired in future as spares. Or maybe for selling on.

I've chatted a bit with the guys at the bodyshop and they're going to help out with more detail in the next few days. They're sending me a set of photos from throughout the whole process with notes on what they had to do.

It's to help me write it up for TIPEC's club magazine, but I'm happy to share the info here as well.

Nice one Tony, much appreciated [:)]

Presumably you're down for Gaydon on the 6th June, watchout for lots of people gently tapping your wings to listen to the different 'clunk' [:D]

Heh, I would expect fingerprints all over the wings by lunchtime!

I'm not sure that I'll make it to Gaydon this year, sadly. We've had some unexpected bills to pay for building work and it's not leaving enough in the bank for our usual short holiday in England with TIPEC "¦

I have just sent artwork to print for the show programme though, so I'll be there in spirit.

That's what I thought when looking at photos of the wings online before buying. I took it as the trade-off I had to make; if I wanted the vents then they came with the indentations for crests. Couldn't have one without the other.

I'm glad I went for it in the end, the crests look fine in the flesh.

I realise the look isn't going to be for everyone (either the vents or the crests "¦ or the splitter, or the big exhaust, or the tinted windows, the smoked lights, the unbranded rear bumper, etc, etc) but the only person who has to like this car is me. It's handy if my wife likes it too, I suppose.

I quite like my car being a bit "˜love it or hate it'. Keeping it standard has never been on my agenda and resale value is irrelevant since I plan to keep it long-term.

It's the one bit I was unsure about, it's funny but I don't like the Ferrari crest on the wings that you sometimes see. My opinion is that the wing vents are so obviously not original that it's OK.

Didn't someone here have a black car with silver Porsche logos on the wings? I seem to remember that looked pretty good as well.

It will be interesting to see how it ages but now in those photos it looks all nice and new. Of course the vents won't do anything unless you removed the inner guard liner but they do add some originality and that's what you're after. Good for you for getting what you want.

Your ride height looks pretty high to me especially at the front. Perhaps that's just stock? It's been a while since I've seen one that high.

Ride height looks about the same as mine, higher at the front than rear.
Not sure I like this but its stock, as you say.

That's right. It's stock ride height on adjustable Konis, specced from the factory.

That looks the nutts, I always loved the 944 , in any guise ,been a engineer the lines build quality etc etc is dateless, the improvment you have done to design & finsh, only make it look superb ! enjoy.

Nope, they don't actually do anything much apart from look nice. If I were to remove the wheel arch liners, the vents would aid with brake cooling. Helpful if I did lots of track driving, but not something I need just now.
