Many thanks to all of you who have offered advice on cars / warranties / RMS etc. It has taken me about 4 months of looking to find "The one". If any of you are out there looking for a 996 about R / S reg, then read this carefully. I don't want to gloat, but there are some deals to be had if you are patient. I have just bought an S Reg 996 C4, silver, GT3 wheels, blue leather, 50000 miles, full Porsche serv. hist. (including a service 3 days before I bought the car), 111 point inspection (to enable me to obtain the warranty), immaculate (and I mean it - not a mark anywhere, apart a stone chip here or there on the front bumper) £ 27000 exactly!!! Admitadly, I have travelled miles and miles and seen some right old nails to find this one, but it was worth it. I bought it from a nice chap in Sutton Coldfield who was a computer consultant and needed the money to set up his own business, but you wouldn't believe some of the cars I had seen before - they looked as if they had been subjected to a hard life and not properly cared for - wethered and tatty, and the cheeky sods were still asking £ 28500 for them!!!
Hold out for the right one - it will be worth the wait. Don't be scared to buy privately, if you get the inspection and the warranty before you buy, it is as good as buying from the dealer themselves - except its about £ 4000 cheaper!!

It sounds like you got yourself a very good deal, well done, i think that it is important to be a little patient as you will get what you want after a little time, and yes i agree you have to travel, i clocked up 4000 looking for my car but to me it was part of the experinece. Also buying from a private seller is a great way of saving despite all the dogs you will find someone who looks after the car the same way as you will.

Enjoy it.
