Finally got my VDO boost gauge!

Or I should have it by tomorrow!

Andy at P****x (are we allowed to mention suppliers any more?!) has worked hard to find me one in psi as opposed to the less ideal bar ones.

I am going to mount it under the radio and plumb it into the line to the Manual Boost Controller, which sits under the dash.

Will post some pics once fitted. Has anyone fitted theirs and wired in the lighting too?

Thanks

Andy at Promax (are we allowed to mention suppliers any more?!)

Course you are, personal recommendations from happy punters is what a club is all about [:)]

OK, well in that case, many thanks to Andy at Promax who has helped me greatly, in terms of advice over the phone and the gauge itself.

Thanks[:D]

OK, update for those who are interested... and those that aren't are getting it anyway[:D]

Trial fitted the blanking plate and boost gauge to the car last night - the 'blanking plate' is actually the gauge mounting plate and fits in place of the cubby hole below the radio.

I was about to connect the tubing to a T piece from the manual boost controller, when I decided that I should really relocate the controller from its current location tucked away under the dash to the hole already cut for it in the dial plate.

Now then, the silicone tubing to the controller under the dash is no long enough to stretch to its proposed new location, so I am going to get some brass joint pieces and metal locking bands to secure the ends of the current silicone tubes to the new extension pieces that Andy @ Promax kindly sent me. Once I have those, I can fasten the MBC in its new location and get out and test/adjust the boost levels.

Andy @ Promax has advised me that I should stick to 1.15 bar max with my Lindsey Racing bits - 16psi, so that's what I'm going for.

What boost levels are you modded turbo guys running?

The only thing I haven't touched is the wiring to the gauge to illuminate it when the lights are on. Where is the best place to run a feed from?

Onward and upward[:D]

Hi Nick

I have the Promax Level 2 Kit which Andy fitted and set up for me.

It is running 1.2 bar at present and the car runs brilliantly[:D]

Had this fitted for 18 months now with no problems.

For the past couple of years it(red turbo) has been running at 1.5 bar all the time[:D](car settup for that boost ),i would love to see a pic of your VDO gauge when its fitted, mine works fine it is fitted on the A-pillar bit but it is a HKS and it doesn't fit in with the rest of the car i reckon[&o]....its a bit subaru..
P.S When i had a MBC i had it plumbed into the ashtray lid that way you can fiddle as you drive,to set it up to the reccomended level,if you upgrade to an EBC at some point a new ashtray is about 7 quid to replace at the OPC.Just an idea.

Well thanks again to Andy at Promax for sending me some extra hose jointing pieces, I should be able to finish the gauge install and move the MBC this weekend.

The MBC will be alongside the gauge in the panel just below the radio, so should be able to adjust on the move, until I have capped it at the 1.2bar/16psi level on my nice new gauge[:D]

I have capped it at the 1.2bar/16psi level on my nice new gauge[:D]

Pedant alert [:D]

1.2 bar is 17.4 psi

16psi is 1.1 bar

Which one do you want?

Pedant alert off now [;)]

Errm, yes - dodgy calculator[8|][:D]

1.1bar and 15.95psi is what I really meant...

..or is that not enough?![:D]

OK, got the T piece to the boost gauge plumbed into one of the silicone lines from the inlet manifold (opted to take it from here rather in the cabin as Andy advised that closer to the manifold would give less of delay to the gauge responding.

Just got to extend the the tubes to the MBC tonight and fit the controller to the gauge panel[:D]

Oh and go for a test drive, obviously....[:D]

OK, finally managed to extend the MBC lines last night and fitted the MBC to the gauge panel alongside the new boost gauge - looks great and with the gauge being a VDO one, similar to original instruments, does not look too Max Power, if you know what I mean[:D]

Started the engine up, let it warm a little and then blipped the throttle a few times and was dismayed to see that whilst the standard dash gauge moved with the revs, the new one did not budge from its stop... ...until I remembered that the dash one showed vacuum as well as boost and had not got to the 0 bar point with my 'blipping' and thus there was no positive boost to be recorded...[8|][8|][:D]

Proper test will have to wait until I have swapped the A/C condensor out tonight and can then take it for a spin.

Will post a pic of the gauge and panel when I get a moment.

After all your hard work I'll bet that had you cursing for a moment.

It's sounding good Nick, it will be interesting to see the end result and also to find out exactly how high you are boosting to []

Finally a couple of pics... if I can rememember how to paste the links etc[8|]

The remaining hole in the panel is intended for an AFR gauge I think, but for now it will have to be a porthole into the bowels of the under dash wiring![:D]

As James May would say... "Oh C**k"![8|]

I either post them the size of postage stamps, or then these are life sized![8|]

Oh well, you get the idea, hopefully?[:D]

Looks good Nick.

Although I have hidden my MBC under the scuttle panel in the engine compartment, as I would fiddle too much if I could reach it [:D]

Looks a nice install though
