Finally My Replacement

Just wanted to share (as I know Colin was interested too) the latest with a replacement for the poor grey 964 that was written off on the way to Le Mans 3 days after picking up from a bare metal resto. Still depressed over the loss but the replacement gets me over this.

Darren at RPM Technik put me on to this one. A no brainer at the price as it had less then 3k miles ago an engine replacement by Autofarm. A velvet red metallic March 1990 first reg and the rebuilt engine being a later 1992 with the plastic air intakes/distributor and all the other later bits (throttle linkage etc). Slightly modified ECU and cup pipe exhaust (but I've not used the G pipe for obvious noise reasons!) I have a dyno printout showing 292bhp but appreciate it can be a bit subjective. It pulls like a monster the previous one never did.

All the best bits from the grey one transferred over by Ollie at RPM - the new Bilstein B6's, H&R Green's, RS clutch/flywheel. A new geo and balance set up to the previous spec I had done by Chris at Centre Gravity. While engine was out the usual fixes as well - tinware replaced/blasted and powder coated and new sound deadening. While virtually just a shell the whole underside and engine was bay steam cleaned - no revealed corrosion repairs necessary. An amazing upgrade was the advice to replace the engine mounts with RS mounts - what a difference this was and have mentioned this in a previous forum topic. Happy as nearly all paid for by selling the engine from the grey 964. Only thing to change now is the whole interior - linen may be nice but not for me, will go all black me thinks.

Classic Cars magazine used the car for a big 911 feature at Milbrook a couple of months ago - what a fun day that was. Magazine has just hit the newsagents and a nice write up too - hopefully now adding some of the provenance in there to make up for that the grey 964 had...

I'm now back and will use as Butzi intended (usually on track though!)

Cheers Andrew. Still feel guilty though after Daytona Coachworx did all that work for nothing. A few body cosmetics need tidying up on this one and maybe it'll make up something if I take this to them next spring too. BTW, if you do another Spa day next year let me know!

Looks great Marcus. And you're right about the difference RS engine mounts make. Will get the mag to see what they say now it's out.

There are already 17 x 964s booked for Spa on March...you need to pay more attention! [:D]

Marcus ,
Great to see this-car looks fabulous & I presume drives as God intended-& thanks for getting us up to date with the project.I almost posted a few days ago when I saw the 1st pics I had seen of it-really pleased for you -I just wish we still had our C2 but it's in good hands.
Still we are now very close to the end of the legal battle which caused us to have to sell it so hopefully will be out looking for a replacement (964 or 993).
Have to say ,I felt happier spinning the 924S at Oulton than I would in a 964,but then the 964 brakes would have been better by far.[:)]
Hope to see it in the flesh sometime.

Congratulations! Lovely car and a lovely colour, all round thats a nice end to a sad tale. Agree with the RS mounts it gives a much more planted rear end.

Top man - thanks... The 911 feature in Classic Cars is an interesting read and Adam the journalist who wrote up the feature and is a fab bloke has his opinion formed - given the choice a 964 makes perfect sense for fun per pound. Great to hear you're almost ready to grab one yourself bud...

Just come back from the long RAC Rally in North Yorks and Scottish Borders (co-driving a Sunbeam Lotus) and now that's done my path is clearer to start making further (tidying up) improvements to the 964 ready for next spring.

We run it via the Rennlist 964 group. Here's the main thread:

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/964-forum/702807-london-964-spa-francorchamps-weekend-2013-the-sequel.html

There is also a dedicated website for the trip that contains all the essential details without the banter:

There's also an associated thread on our very own 964RS forum [;)]

Congratulations. The new car looks fantastic and all the better for being a slightly unusual colour.

I saw your poor silver car at RPM and Ollie told me what had happened. Ouch. I hope the new car gets you over the pain.

Thanks James. Indeed, big shame, but as the motoring journalist said when he used my new one for the CC mag article, at least Ferdinand would rather it went that way (on the edge) rather than neglected, unused and die a slow death! Something in that I suppose...

Ollie's helping to dismantle the other one there, and to get my 2013 upkeep funds kicked off, most the parts will gradually appear on ebay bit by bit...

You new car looks fantastic Marcus, at least there is a happy ending!

I need to catch up with you regarding a couple of bits you were going to help me out with [;)]

I'm about to book up for next year's Le Mans & hope to see you there, you'd be welcome to join our merry band, as long as you have a good drinking arm. [8|]

Ah yes Colin, I did promise. Logistics and other life stuff got in the way. Mail/IM me your list.

Kind of addicted to Le Mans (probably in part by the whole build up and drive down!) Not sure of the numbers for the next trip - it may just be me. I'll catch up with you nearer the time when I know who and what days...

Very nice.

A pity I was too late to buy your engine, my blue one would've been finished by now if I had!

Hope to meet up in Spa.

Engine went to a good home - a supercharged 964 track car project I believe!

hi marcus car looks stunning we were marshaling at duncombe park as you know the fog spoiled it a bit but i was in mk2 heaven

Nice one Ray. Without marshals giving up their time no racing or rally events would happen...

Duncombe Park was a funny one for many - first go we 180'd in the early double SQL then on second go we 180'd on the first HPR going down the hill! Concrete and wet leaves not a good mix. Perez's Stratos did the same too. We didn't make 3 or 4 (or Croft) as the in-between forest stage gave us a broken half-shaft which took a couple of hours to fix (by the time we found a spare). We rejoined at Hemsterley.

Apologies to others for the off-topic rally waffle...

Marcus, the car looks fabulous. Great colour, better than the last one. Hope to see it next year.

David
