Fire Extinguisher

Hi

Has anyone got any experience of fitting a removable (non automatic) fire extinguisher into a 993 and if so do you know where it fits, how it fits and who supplies them at what cost with the bracket? I have seen some pictures of them fitted to the floor well in front of the passenger seat but not sure if this is the approved method?

hi Preston,

suggest you have a look on the USA pelican parts website [;)]
and do a search for Extinguisher:, best on teh 911 technical forum, rater than 9#64 / 993 section:

as I remember seeing loads of different options for extinguisher positions - metal bracket front face of the passenger seat mechanism ( so behind the legs of your passenger ) was one favoured option, looked quite simple to knock-up.

think one soilution that seemed good was to:
  • take passenger seat out - or just take out the front 2 bolts,
  • then 'fabricate' an L profile steel plate - length to match the width of your seat., guess about 3-4mm steel,
  • and broad ( the froont, flat face ) enought to bolt fix the extinguisher to;
( imagine a capital L and tilt it backwards 180degress[8|])
  • aim is to 'slot' this metal L underneath your seat runners[:)],
  • have holes drilled in the L to match the seat runner holes - so that when it is slotted in, and you re-fit the front seat 2 bolts - they anchor the L in place.
  • Then drill hoels in the front face, to suit the fixing bracket / straps of the extinguisher
blue peter basics would be to make one in cardboard 1st to check clearances etc.
and spray paint it ( hammerite satin black, loads of coats built up very gradually ) before it is fitted - egg sucking lesson over![8D]

ps:
pessimistically - seen few posts about just how quickly a car fire uses up a small fire extinguisher[]very, very quickly[:-][][&o][][:-][][:-][&o]

so now you have all tempted fate by reading this last part of the post,
go and buy a 2nd one to keep in the boot ( fixed down so it doesn't put mole hills in the bonnet under braking!![]
