FIRST ENGINE START OF THE DAY

Does anyone have this problem. I've got a 1997 2.5 boxster. When I come to start the engine for the first time of the day, as soon as it fires it revs quite high (about 2500 rpm) then drops down to 500 rpm like its going to stall and then settles itself. Also get the problem when I'm driving normally. If i'm slowing down and push the clutch in the revs drop to the point of where its going to stall then rise back up and then it settles. I don't know if the two problems are linked together to some sort of fault, can anyone help.

No idea on what the problem is, but my 1997 2.5 def does not do that either on startup or when driving, so like you though there does seem to be some fault.

MY2K 2.7 has always done the rev on startup but doesn't drop to the point of stalling.

The initial startup burst is normal, but the almost-stall isn't, as John says. Could be a dirty throttle body or idle control valve. Also could be the MAF sensor on the way out.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I've got a feeling its the MAF sensor on the way out like Richard said.

I'd clean it first, very easy - access with security Torx driver and spray with contact cleaner - may save yourself in excess of £100. [8D]

Hi there,

Very intersting comments but where is the MAF sensor.

We have a similar problem I think. The car starts ok but as soon as you accelerate, the revs go down and almost backfires (you can hear the exhaust). When you drive off it does again for the 1st 200 m. then nothing. When starting from hot all ok. So is it the MAF or the idle control valve. Your comments would be appreciated (2.7 Jan 00 with 28000 miles), Thanks

All you need to know about your MAF, how to clean it and what with.

Check MAF but also for airs leaks around the intake manifolds. This is what causes the cold start stalling during the warm up phase.

To John Bond,

Thank you very much indeed for your info regarding MAF sensor. The info on the www was excellent and tested it as suggested. Unfortunately the sensor was faulty, Fitted a new one today and the car goes perfect, what a difference. Not cheap at 380 euros.

Thanks again for your help
