First Porsche- 981 Boxster

Hello Porsche Owners,
I bought my first Porsche a few weeks ago, a 981 Boxster and I'm impressed. Initially it felt rather heavy and slow, probably because my previous car was an Ariel Atom, but that's all relative. I've adapted my driving style and now love it.
My car is 18 months old and at the time of purchase had done just over 9,000 miles, and ridiculously has over £16,000 of extras on it, but as we all know, that's Porsche. In fact I found all the extra's so complicated when I was looking for a car I had to create a spread sheet showing all the cars in my price range and all their relative extras and what they cost, just to try and understand which cars were good value.
However, and this probably shows a prejudice on my part, I expected as I was buying from an OPC I'd be buying from a dealership a rank above the norm.
I knew from what I'd read on this site that getting a reduction in the asking price is practically impossible, but when the salesman tells you "˜It's price to sell' and you point out its been for sale for 6 months and he looks at you blankly, seeming not understanding the hypocrisy of what he's saying, you do wonder.
However, later when the deal had been done and he showed me over the car before I drove away I discovered he had little knowledge of the product, certainly less than I'd gained after a couple of hours looking at the Porsche App, "Good to Know" (which he'd never even heard of) so I thought it best to just drive away and sort out the controls myself.
I must admit to also being disappointed that after spending over £40,000 on a car Porsche don't update the satellite navigation on the PCM with the latest maps. I was told an update was about £150, which to Porsche must be much less; rather parsimonious of Porsche I thought considering what I'd just spent.

Hi Paul

Well done on your new purchase - hope
it gives you many years of fun -

What is the variant - is it a 2.7 or an S.

I agree with you in respect of customer
service - I was promised a free sat nav
upgrade ("when it comes out") just after I'd
given them £50,000 for a new car - but when
it came to it all I got were excuses as to why
I was then expected to pay the £150 squid

Where was the Porsche Centre that
you purchased it from

Hi and welcome

After an Atom I guess I have to ask did you ever consider a Spyder

Whats the spec on your 981 manual or pdk, what were the options and having owned no less than 7 Boxsters myself since 1997 it is a great piece of kit and despite the basic spec and high list price there is just nothing that has ever come close to giving it a good run for its money and 17 years later that situation hasn't changed in the slightest[8D]

I would guess that at 18 months old and £40 k that it would be an "S"
With 16 k of extras and only 9 k miles that's got to be great value for the best roadster money can buy at any price !!!

Enjoy the summer drives while I dream of mine after a few more months building works !!!

Welcome. It's nice to hear an enthusiastic 981 owner. They certainly are an accomplished sports car.

If you would require a little more in-depth knowledge than that provided by your salesperson I would recommend the Boxster 981 Information Book available from:

http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/PK981BOOK.html?Category_Code=981BOXSTERSENGINEmaint2

It's an official Porsche compilation and covers all aspects of the 981 functions and operations. It even includes the top down service position instructions for access to the engine bay.

Don't talk about the steering ;).

Enjoy

Paul,

Congrats on your recent purchase! Allbeit you don't sound too thrilled with your Porsche Dealership already! They are like most main dealers really, you need to find the single salesperson who can be bothered to think out of the box [:)] Is it me or are Porsche dealerships getting more influenced by VW these days? When I get a loaner from Reading on Thurs I'll be getting either a Porsche or a VW due to a change of policy!

I'm sure it's very different to the Atom, not really an apples for apples comparison really... At least you can use the Boxster far more I expect! I felt the same when I got out of an S1 Exige into a 996.

Enjoy it and at least you'll be able to get the roof down now to fully enjoy it [:)]

Thanks everyone for the welcome,

To answer some questions; I originally thought of the 2.7, but then discovered that the S depreciated faster and generally had more extras on them, so second hand (sorry, pre-owned) they were better value.
I don't know if it's acceptable to name dealers on here, so I'll simply say Robin Hood would not be pleased.
I didn't consider the Spyder or any previous incarnation of the Boxster as I needed the extra leg room the 981 gives. I have ridiculous 36" legs.
And much to the chagrin of many on here it has a PDK gearbox. Sorry, but I don't see how removing your hand from the steering wheel to move a metal lever about while stamping up and down with your left leg increases involvement with the car. For similar reasons I don't crave a manual choke.
Hope to meet up with some of you owners over the summer.

Hi there Paul,
Good to hear you have made the change. Hope you drive it with more restraint than the lakes weekend we all did in the Atoms. You have to use you brakes in a Boxster. I find it much more pleasurable to drive without a helmet on. I considered a 981 but really love the individuality of the Spyder and the less depreciation. I drove a 981s at Silverstone and loved it. Hope we can catch up sometime at one of the meetings.

Keith and Maelyn (only Gulf Atom in UK)

Well hello Keith,

Fancy you moving across to a Porsche as well. I miss the drama of the Atom, but at least my wife comes out with me now. Plus the fuel consumption's better and the insurance is half the price.

Yes it would be good to meet up, but as you say drive a little slower than that weekend in the Lakes.

Thanks for the link, didn't know this sort of manual existed. I assume only available from US via £28 postage costs.

Ref the Boxster 981 Information Book, as far as I know it's only available in the USA. Mine was sent as a gift, but your right the postage is steep. Friendly poster/relative in the US?

Heresy!

Even if "involvement" is the biggest journo inspired nonsense in the modern motoring world! [:D]

In the OPs defence he did rubbish the salesperson and avoided mention of the demonic electrically assisted steering.

Personally I don't see any virtue in pedalling a clutch either, but then I rather like the steering..
