First Porsche

I am on my third Porsche, a 996 C4, and 22 year old son wants to get on the bandwagon with a 944. He has £4k to spend , can afford the insurance and will have a 'float' of £500. Can anyone give any advice based on their own experience as to whether he can expect a good experience or constant repairs and parting with money. We have read the articles but we would rather hear straight from the horses mouth.

I rather like his idea but common sense leads to this post before committing

Whilst your son might be able to find an iffy S2 or Turbo at £4K he would be better going for a good late Lux.

The Lux is the simplest of the 944's and thus has less to go wrong but will still be IRO 15 years old. No car of that age will be perfect and you have to expect to spend time/money chasing little faults, some of which might be just anoying (remote boot release doesn't work, water in passenger footwell, rear wiper doesn't work) to potententialy more terminal.

Although a car for £4K it is still a Porsche and you will still pay Porsche prices for new spares. New Porsche spares can take some time in comming through. I waited 6 months for a 968 cubby box, not a part which would put the car off the road granted. I also waited two months for a replacement hard pipe which could have been more inconvenient. The plus side is there is a ready supply of second hand spare parts.

If you or you son are willing to get your hands dirty, and you have a good Porsche independant you can use for the more difficult jobs, then a 944 might be a good option. Otherwise, there are a lot of nearly new buzz boxes available for £4K that souldn't need the TLC that a 944 will require.

I have assumed you will read the FAQ's at the head of this forum regarding things to look for.
 
£4k should get you a very nice Lux or S, although take your time and get one with good history, lots of bills, and all the expensive stuff already done (e.g. clutch and belts). Get an inspection done to verify this. My S was around that price, and I've luckily had very little to do, just regular service items.

Like John says, even the very best cars will have little niggly jobs to do from time to time, and it's how you go about them that will make the difference to running costs. The belts also need doing every 3 years (or 30k miles, whichever's first), which needs to be budgeted for.

You may need to spend a bit of time to ensure you find a good one that is owned by an enthusiast, possibly an active Register member. That way they will have attended to all the bits that crop up.

I think you should be able to find a very good 2.5 Lux for under £4k with a good history and recent belts, brakes etc BUT there will be an awful lot of bad cars whose owner has a misguided opinion of how great his car is.
 
you'll find good a 924S (pretty much the same as the 944 2.5 but better looking :) ) for 2-2.5K, a very good one for 3K, or a 924S Le Mans for 3-3.5K (special edition with MO30 suspension)

The 1986 & 87 models had a slightly detuned 150bhp motor - the 88models had 160bhp

As above from the guys, you'll get an 86 lux in 'good condition for age and mileage' (say 120k miles) for £3.5k. If your son does loads of short journeys he's looking at 20 mpg, which won't match a modern smaller engined car. I always say leave £1.5k in the bank for emergencies but possibly thats overkill. There'll be ongoing little jobs to do, but that's a part of the fun. Tell him to go for it, if he wants to sell it after 6 months he'll probably get back at least what he paid![:D]

No way is any 924 better looking than a 944. Where are the purposeful wide boy arches? 924 is twiggy. 944 is Monroe.

Best Porsche for £4000 is a 2.7 944. More torque than 2.5(quite a bit 33lbs)-still only 8v-cheaper to run than an 2.5s or S2/Turbo.

A Turbo would break a young man on a low income-insurance for one.

Hello, would love to see some pics of your 944. I've got an 83 one myself that I'm trying to rescue as it had been sat in a garage for nearly 8 years not moving.
