First proper classic car experience - broke down!

Feel like I've got my classic Porsche wings as I had my first breakdown today. Car seemed to stall and catch itself again before just stalling and not restarting, about 2 mims from home. Luckily it's easy to push onto the paement. Got the wife to drive round to give me a jump start but that didn't work. Sat for a further 5 mins reading the breakdown blurb and gave it "one more try." Car burst into life and after sitting for 5 mins to see whether this would stay the case I continued on my way. Ironically, I was off to the garage to get my balance belt retensioned!

So, is this a sign of the infamous DME relay failure, flat battery, or something worse?
 
It 'could' be the first signs of the contacts in the DME relay starting to wear out. I doubt it was a flat battery if it started again without being recharged
 
Left the car with my mechanic to adjust the balance belt and every time he needed to start it it was fine. Will probably pick up a spare dme for the glovebox or fashion a 3 way jumper as mentioned the other week. Borrowed a mitsubshi fto from my mate's garage to get me home, a lot of car for the money!
 
It could be many things of course, but hopefully nothing serious. (Has the car been used regularly?)

I had an AFM pack up following storage of a 944T, there is a resistor with a wiper (moving contact) attached to the Flap in the Air Flow Meter, The Units sends a signal to the ECU. (Think its 0 to 5volts)

Anyway, it would run at tickover, but once you touched the throttle, the airflow increased, opened the flap, moved the contact to the worn spot, lost the signal, cut the engine.

DME's are favourites, but I have carried one round in the glove compartment for 5 years now

Have had 3 more incidents where the car has cut out within 100m of home when cold and not restart. Every time a quick pop of the bonnet and wiggle of the dme relay has seen it start first time. Relieved that it seems to be nothing more sinister.

Unfortunately I have now developed a pretty bad suspension knock but will put that in a new thread.

Are you still risking driving it without getting a new relay? I hope you've got a good relationship with the AA! [:D]


 
It is absolutely fine once warmed up. But I've only been out in it to try and troubleshoot the relay problem and work out where the knock is coming from. I had my friend following me each time just in case!
 
New Dme relay today as Newcastle OPC is 10 mins away and no problems at all (well, not from that anyway)
 
I hope you bought two as that one will wear out as well [;)]

Ok maybe you shouldn't worry for a few years but every 944 owner should keep a spare in the glovebox [:)]
 
They only had one in stock, but that had occurred to me. Going to dismantle the old one and if I can clean up the contacts sufficiently it may make a spare, we'll see.
