First time belts being done under my watch - couple of q's.

Checked my service log last night to see the last time the belts were done was 2008 [] only 7k miles since but even so I'll get it booked in before it all goes pear shaped. Any recommendations on where to get the belt/roller kit, is any one better than another?

I've read that the water pump should be replaced at same time - is that correct, and can I get away with replacing the seal/gasket rather than a completely new pump?

Just checking before I miss something given it's my first time!

Cheers All
Lee

Hi Lee

I'm sure a call to Andy at Promax motorsport (01296 714856) will soon sort you out with a suitable belt/roller kit for your car. Regarding the waterpump if it's due for a change then probably best to do it, at the very least I'd be checking it for any play/stiffness in it's bearing. I wouldn't take it off just to change seals unless they are actually leaking, it's very likely that when removing the pump some of it's securing bolts will snap due to seizing. The problem is that some of the bolts enter the water passageways, as you can imagine, steel, alloy and water don't mix well. So be prepared for what could be a pig of a job, I had to drill/tap/helicoil a number of mine when rebuilding my own engine, difficult enough with the engine out of the car.
There's nothing difficult about working on these engines but you do need to be prepared for things taking some time, just take one step at a time and don't leave anything to chance..Porsche can supply you with a set of new bolts for the pump, you will need these, there's no point in trying to reuse the originals, oh and iirc you'll need some thread sealant too, note not thread lock.

I've done the belts on my turbo several times, I have assorted tools you're welcome to borrow, including a tensioner tool. Plus 4 engineering can also sell you a pin spanner and 24/27mm thin spanners for doing the tensioner rollers - both quality tools at low prices

Let me know if I can help ?

If you don't have much experience fitting timing belts the 944 belts aren't the ones I'd pick to learn on. Having said that there's excellent guides on youtube if you're competent. IMO the tensioner sets the belt on the tight side for a cold engine, and that's what can knock out the bearing prematurely on a used waterpump. The balancer belt is fiddly to set correctly but if it's wrong it will whine noticeably.

Much wisdom here on the belts question. And Chris's spanners and flywheel lock make the job a load easier too.

I'd not get too excited about the water pump. Some people say you need to change it with every belt change, some people say change it with every other belt change. Mine was changed for the first time at around 150,000 miles and that was only because it had failed, with the impeller coming loose on the shaft. Have a good look at it with the belts off and see whether there is any endfloat on it, or any signs of leaking. If it all seems to be in good order then I'd leave it be.

I have tried to find my posts on the work involved fitting a new pump with seized bolts.....alas I can not find my build thread using search....lol

Plenty of good advice here - I'll just add that I had my belts changed at the dealer (who did it just before I bought it). At that time it was belts, rollers and water pump. I did this change with 28K kilometers on the belts but well past in years. They inspected and agreed that only the belts needed doing this time (due to age) - water pump and rollers, etc were in good shape and would serve another cycle of belts.

Blimey! Just picked up the car after the belts/rollers/water pump have all been replaced and it's like driving a new car :p The difference is just amazing - prob what happens if you go that long without changing them I suppose. Everything feels a lot more taut and purposeful. Off for a blast Sunday with some Scotland members over for the weekend and then back in next week for a service inc new dizzy and rotor. It should be purring after this little lot - needless to say I am a happy bunny.

Chris do you change your own head gaskets?

Hi Scott

yes/ but no.....

I've had the engine apart and could do a head gasket if I had to, I had the engine rebuilt at 107K and its only on 135 now - used a Cometic one, so should be ok for a while.

I've just done the head gasket on my S2. Like most jobs on a 944, not difficult but time consuming. Just a case of being methodical and making a note of where everything goes.
