and it's like asking about someone's religious choices. Quite passionate they are! However for the uninitiated can you explain what it means to 'clay' the car? Excuse my ignorance but I've never done it and based on your pictures I might give it a crack.[]

I've used the Bilt hamber one (uses water as lubricant) and they do a good job of getting your paint clean. You need to wash the car, clay it, polish then wax to protect.

Looks great Lee! I've been reading all about these waxes, polishes, potions, claying, carnauba etc on a Rennlist thread http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=426588&highlight=swissvax

Well like I said this is only the first time I have ever tried, but I think it looks great.
I first washed the car thoroughly and dried.
Then I purchased some of this:
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/detailing-clay/meguiars-quik-clay-kit/prod_226.html
And off I started.
You open the clay bar (looks like childrens plastacine) and tear off a 50p peace round peice approx 1/4 inch thick. I then warmed it in my hands slightly so soft and easy to work with.
Also in the quick clay kit is a spray bottle to lubricate the bodywork.
I simply sprayed a section of body then with the clay in the tips of my fingers rubbed up and down the panel 3 to 4 times in straight lines, then changed direction 90 degrees to do the same 3 to 4 times across the same panel.
If you also have a microfibre cloth to hand once you are happy with the finish dry the panel.
If you do say half the roof first and dry it then rub your fingers across the untreated paint work first and then across the clayed panel you will feel the difference.
It is staggering how smooth it feels compared to what you thought were shiny clean bodywork.
If the clay bar starts to get really clogged and dirty tear off a little more and carry on your work.
Do not throw away the dirty section of bar, as I used these on the wheels, which now also feel silky smooth.
Once you have done this, YOU MUST zymol or similair the bodywork as it strips off any wax that was applied previously.
Once clayed though applying Zymol took no time at all as the paint was so smooth and clean.
All in all with a quick clean of the car inside it took me 4 or 5 hours which does not seem too bad. I am sure I could have clayed more but it is a start and I am happy with the results.
I used this guide to help me:

By coincidence I found a picture of my car when owned by the P.O.
Looks like he might have done it just before this picture which would only be about 3 years ago. Be nice to bring the car back up to that standard. Looks brand new.
You should only really need to throw it away if you drop it.

You do however lose 187 points for leaving it 2yrs after I posted This
The only issue with clay is that it leaves behind a residue from the lube that isn't removed by wax. I now clay, followed by a very quick run over with the Meguiars "Paint Cleaner" (which takes but minutes when the car is glassy-smoothe from claying) followed by wax (which takes but a fraction of a second when the car is silky-smoothe from claying and cleansing [] )

I used the 3-2-1 stuff from K300, which includes a clay bar, paint cleanser and the carnauba wax.
As you say Lee, the difference after the claying is incredible and as there must now be less air resistance, surely slightly faster too.....[][]
