First Trackday

Warning! This is an unashamed testament about how good our cars are[8D]

Every time I drive this car I just love it more and more. It is without doubt the most rewarding car to drive that I have ever owned. I thought it was good on the road but now I'm back from taking it on the track at Bedford Autodrome (at the annual 911UK bash) I think it is amazing[:)].

Due to a bit of rain the track was in the words of TopGear, mildly moist and at the start I was slightly more nervous of taking it out than I would have been normally. Although not a trackday Virgin I was full of apprehension about how the 964 would handle compared to the more neutral handling of my boxster which I had driven on track previously. I needn't have worried because although it was different, it was so much better. The grip it showed was astonishing. After a few medium paced laps and some laps with a good instructor I became completely confident with the car. It's greatet beauty was how it came out of a corner. All I had to do as I cleared the apex was point it in the right direction, wind off the lock and punch my foot to the floor. No squirming, no sliding, just mountains of grip. The hardest thing to do was to remember to change gear because it hit the rev limiter so quickly in the lower gears (I did this twice[]).

At speed the car is just so nimble and was a delight to flick through the chicane at the end of the back straight. The brakes were just as astonishing as the grip of the chassis. They hauled the car to a stop and almost pressed my passengers into the windscreen. And the braking was accompanied by the wonderful, characterstic noise of the big air cooling fan winding down like a jet engine going into reverse thrust! When I got to the braking pointing exactly right (not too often) so that I was just off the brakes at the turn-in point, the nose of the car would go exactly where I wanted it to.

Although I was passed many times by more modern and more powerful 911s during the day, I can honestly say that I have no desire to go bigger and better. The 964 without any of the modern driving aids is a joy to drive on the track because it's totally down to you to get it right. It offers so much satisfaction. I can't wait to do it again and if any other new owners are thinking of doing it - get out there![;)]

However, the one drawback of taking my car on the track is that now I have this horrible urge to rip out the beautiful leather interior and go down the minimalist, track focussed route[8D]

They're good in the dry too!
I did Brands Hatch a couple of weeks ago and agree with your sentiments.

I still feel like that having had my car 18 months.
I've started the track mods and I fear there is no turning back...

I'm hoping my next one will be in the dry (about 6 weeks time at Donnington )[:)]

I thought you'd say that![:D]

Great post. Not sure that I'd take my P+J on a track as he's now old and deserves not to be stressed too much I reckon.

RS next for you![;)]

Now there's someone who knows how to lose weight![8D]

Keith, I see that your car is set up to enter the Speed Championship. Out of interest, what are you allowed to do to the car, apart from the obvious trim removal and roll cage in the photo?

And, what would you recommendation be for seats? Is it possible to get lighter race seats that just fit on the existing rails that allow some adjustment and be comfortable enough to drive a reasonable distance?

They even moved the damn steering wheel......

kevin

hey kevin think porsche prefer them on that side, get funny looks if alison falls asleep on a journey, folks think shes fallen asleep at the wheel..

you can pretty well do as much as you want to the C2 as long as you dont go over the 250bhp class limit, or reduce the weight below 1000kgs, fitting slick tyres would move you up a class too. email me and i can send you a full copy of regs. there is a standard and modified option but you wouldnt win much with a standard car now, you would also need to take a spare set of wheels with shaved sticky tyres with 2mm of tread left, they have tried to let you do pretty much what you want to your car to be competitive , which doesnt suit me as i like to drive there and back and when a friend follows with sticky tyres it has always rained, so doing lancs and cheshire and liverpool and chester club championships this year instead, miss the porsches though.......not as much tracktime as trackdays so easier on the car and nice to compete against the clock (and the chance of a trophy) we have often driven 3 hours in the race buckets with no probs, i have cobra suzukas whick took a lot of juggling to fit as the high sides obstruct the gearlever, they took 6 weeks to order as i didnt want logos on them, they do a wide version for £30 extra the factory is in telford ...would probably buy imolas next time

may be worth buying a back issue of march total 911 mag as robmug has just fitted a pair

suppose an easy fit would be a pair of recaros with their runners but they wont tilt though, good excuse for a drive into wales and visit tweeks

recaro furious
