Fitting a gearbox

I've finally got a gearbox for my s2 and i'm fitting it tommorow, i had a look underneath today and it all looks straight forward except for the selector shaft, will the box wiggle off the shaft before it hits the spare wheel well or does it get more complicated than that? is there anything else to look out for? any advice much apreciated. cheers, Rich.

Erm ... it's more complex than that. And a pig of a job. It's about 60% of the clutch change procedure ...

From memory:

  • Driveshafts off
  • Remove selector rod from gearbox (small rubber gaiter needs pulling back, then there is a bolt to be removed)
  • Gearshift gaiters (inside car) off - remove gearknob and work from there
  • Remove gearlever (circlip gets the selector rod off, then 10mm or possibly 13mm bolt at the bottom and it will be free)
  • Pull selector rod ALL THE WAY FORWARDS from within the car. It will move about 12 or 14 inches, and you will skin your hands doing so, but it needs to come as far forward as possible
  • Find access panel on the side of the gearbox bellhousing - approx 4 inch trapezoidal rubber cover on the side of the bellhousing, and pull it out
  • Undo two pinch bolts on the sleeve inside the access panel (very tight) and slide sleeve back onto gearbox
  • Support gearbox, remove two support bolts from the top of it, lower and remove
Fitting new one is the reverse of removal. It's a pig of a job getting the mount to line up.

Oli.

thanks for the advice guys, i fitted the box on friday and did manage to get it out with only disconnecting the gear selector at the box end, you have to get the angle of the dangle right but it does just squeeze out!
