Fitting double din head unit?

I have a single din unit in the car currently and am thinking to change to a double din Pioneer head unit which has navigation and Bluetooth built in.

Do I need some kind of fitting kit to be able to do this? Because I guess the heater panel will have to move to where the CD storage is and then the wiring etc etc.

Any help appreciated.

Having had the air con control panel out, i would say its a simple procedure to move the panel to the lower centre console, plenty of wiring loom available.

You obviously can only do this mod with the climate control option, if you have the rotary dial non air con default spec these can't be moved.

Also depends what sound upgrade you already have too - if you have the CDR-23 unit of the later 986 cars, and either the sound pack or the Bose upgrade then the headunit connects to the amp in the front boot via fibre optics, so any upgrade needs a new amp and wiring between h/unit and amp.

I suspect you have a CDR22 or 32 in which case the wiring is a lot less complicated and much easier to upgrade.

I have climate control, so will that panel relocate under the CD tray without any extra parts required?

I have fully upgraded system, currently a single din Alpine unit connected to am amp and a Jenhert custom door builds so I know there shouldn't really be an issue putting the unit in, I am more concerned about the facia and the climate control reclocation and what all parts I need.

I have seen these double din kits:-

Cheaper one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CONNECTS2-PORSCHE-BOXSTER-DOUBLE-DIN-STEREO-FACIA-KIT-/170487774502?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_FasciaPlates_SM&hash=item27b1dcfd26

Nicer looking more expensive: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/97-02-PORSCHE-986-BOXSTER-CUSTOM-2-DIN-INSTALLATION-KIT-/220537576001?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3359105a41

Thanks again Mark, Richard was very very helpful and has set me on the right track.

Progress made, I know own a used Pioneer AVIC-F900BT, need to order the climate control facia (996.552.339.00.01C) and the double din facia, seems however nice the USA one is, its not really worth all the extra money.

Now my only concern is http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/10782.html is right for my Boxster, this is the same model as my ebay link above, but this does not list Boxster where as the eBay one does. Just that this shop is not far from me and I could pick it up from them, prefer to buy it from a shop, but they will not accept return if its wrong.
